This could be a larva of a moth in the family Arctiidae known as the yellow bear (Spilosoma virginica - see http://tinyurl.com/nd7q5k for an example. Larvae of this species can be highly variable in coloration.
Suunto, thank you. I thought I'd have a chance to make an entry when I marked it solved! I looked at the pics at that website and do believe it's that's lovely furry white creature's offspring. Doesn't look to be doing much harm.
