I might be moving to Pine Grove, CA this fall. Can anyone tell me what is the zone there? Or how about the first frost date, last frost date, average high and low temps? Any websites that are useful? I am now in Texas and gardening will be a real challenge for me in California. Thanks!!! Sally

Kingslandgirl, if you can purchase a Sunset Western Garden Book, it will be invaluable to you. I am not familiar with Pine Grove, but someone on this forum should be able to answer your questions.

Thanks Carol. I'll look for the book. I guess the biggest town near Pine Grove is Jackson. Have you heard of Volcano? It's near there too. Thanks again.
You do know why they call it Volcano, don't you? Really hot in the summer. How hot is it where you crurrently live in Texas? The Gold Country is awfull nice, though.
From looking at the map, I would guess you'd be in USDA zone 8, although I don't know what elevation you'll be at and that could put you in a colder zone. I second Carol's recommendation to pick up the Sunset Western Garden book though, there are so many microclimates here and the Sunset book provides way better guidance than the USDA zones for what will do well (there are tons of plants that are hardy to zone 9a that don't do well for me, but when I follow the Sunset zones I rarely have trouble) From what I've gathered, gardening in TX can be pretty challenging too, so I don't think you'll find it any harder to garden here, just different!
wcgypsy - this weekend where I was in Texas was 110. Can handle the heat - now the cold could be another story :)
Oh, you'll fit right in in the Gold Country...lol....
Ok, once I knew what part of the state to look for, I found it in SWG as Sunset zone 7." Typical winter lows range from 35 to 26 degrees F, with record lows averaging from 18 to 0 F". The summers are hot and dry. I have been through that area, and it is beautiful in the summer. Very uncrowded, but an easy drive to the citys.

I like that area in the Fall and Winter. I grew up in my younger years in the San Joaquin, for the most part, and heading up through the Hwy 49 area is a good memory for me. My BIL and SIL are in Sonora still....
Thanks to all of you for your advice and help. I'm looking forward to be a Californian - my husband is from CA and is very excited! I'll have some adjustments to be sure - especially in the gardening area.
