Seen these small guys around...seen maggots in the iris flowers...could this be the culprit?

Not sure about the maggots but it looks like the Urophora quadrifasciata fruitflies that were introduced to eat knapweed. But, maybe something else?

I agree with claypa; I was about to post nearly the same information. Most (if not all) maggots found in iris rhizomes appear to be secondary invaders of damaged/decaying tissues rather than being the initial cause of damage.

The maggot in my siberian iris are feeding on the buds...especially the stamens. They are not the same iris that burrows into the rhizomes of bearded iris.

Meanwhile, I think you have the fly ID'ed!
