Pruning Magnolias

I have a magnolia Jane which I would like to shape, I want to trim back some of the lower branches to raise the base of the tree to facilitate planting hostas below it.

Is there a best way to cut branches, do I have to do anything to protect the cuts (sealing with something, etc)

'Jane' is a pretty vigorous magnolia, so it probably will have little ill effect from pruning.

There are proper ways to make pruning cuts. If you don't have an illustrated text on pruning trees and shrubs, you should easily find this information on line with a simple google search. Additionally, you could visit your county Extension Service office, where you should be able to procure written info on this subject.

Make clean cuts per instructions. No sealing of the wound/cut is necessary. I'd prune a few branches at a time, then pause a while for reflection. Measure twice, cut once 'cause you can't put it back.

If you were to post photos of the plant before you begin, additional opinions could be forthcoming.
