I see these growths on trees in the local woods. I always called them 'bowls' but I don't think that's the right term.
Any ideas?

It's a homonym - sounds the same (almost).
You are describing burls!

I was going to stretch the smart aleck angle, and suggest:
One might make bowls from burls on boles of beeches and birches.
But I bit my tongue.
I thought they did make bowls from burls.
The second pic looks like lips and a tongue. (:o)
