This picture is a bit fuzzy (these guys just keep moving around) but I hope someone can tell me what this bug is....I have a kajillion of them on a datura plant. I pulled the plant and wonder if I need to do something drastic to get rid of these or will they go away now that the plant is gone?
Thanks for any help.
Mary
CLOSED: Black and Red Bug
This appears to be a small milkweed bug; Lygaeus kalmii (Hemiptera/Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/mmny46 for an image. They usually are associated with milkweed (Asclepias sp.), but have been found on Datura as well. They appear to feed on developing seeds (members of the family Lygaidae commonly are known as 'seed bugs')
Thanks for the ID suunto. I Googled the name for more info but there's not much to be found. I guess they are harmless and I'll just leave them to vanish in the fall. The plant has been removed.
