Got Germination on VERY old Corn Broom seed

I was sent some very old corn broom seed that attempts had been made on germinating with no success. I tried the baggie method, no luck. Then I tried jiffy mix seed starter mix with a sprinkle of rootone and chamomile tea. Took five days to have seedlings. I have never used the rootone but it said anti-fungal and antibacterial so thought a sprinkle might not hurt. I am now going to try to use it on other stubborn seeds. Has anyone else used this for starting seeds? Kathy in Tx

Mmm - that's kind of expensive stuff to use for seeds, when really it shouldn't have any effect on anything but roots (kind of like putting fertilizer on seeds). If you still have some seeds left, why don't you try rooting some without the Rootone and see if it roots as well?

I used it primarily for the antibacterial and antifungal properties memntioned on the bottle, not the rooting ones. The seeds have been tried several different ways by others and the baggie method for me. I still have seeds left but wont try to germ any more this year as a few sprouts are all I needed for something that is not edible. I will store them in the fridge and retry without the rootone next year if I have room, but will certainly keep fresh seeds from the ones that are growing now just to be safe :). I bought the rootone when someone dug a baby tree up and cut the tap root very short and someone still wanted to try to save it so rootone was what was recommended. Dont really have any use for it now and not real sure about how it works. Thanks for responding. I am learning more and more every time I visit the great people here at Daves! Kathy
