Because I learned it correctly, I hear it when people say it incorrectly. Problem is alot of them don't know it's incorrect.
What expressions (or words) drive you nuts??
Vossner, you made my point.
Those are words for little people and an adult addressed that way is sometimes offended.
I call children sweetie and dear but would never address an adult stranger that way.
I am referring to waitresses,Medical office personal etc.
It deminishes the adult for the person using the word.
Thats where the controle comes in.
I know its picky and often so overused by the person saying it they dont realize they do it.
I tend to see people who deminish in this way as being insecure.
political ones? "hunker down". during hurricane (well any of them) our illustrious community leaders kept reminding us we had to "hunker down". I was never quite sure about what it meant, so I didn't hunker.
For strangers, that's a different story. But my wife and I use the terms for each other, not just the kids.
GE, i see what you're saying. I guess I don't call total (adult) strangers by those names and it would feel wrong to do so. But I do call my favorite friends sweetie all the time, and I do mean to be affectionate w/ that term, not controlling. Maybe I will ask them if they mind.
There's a visual! ^_^
How about when people say, 'Doggy-dog world'! I crack up when I hear that.
Oh, here's one I really don't understand: that was epic.
You can say "what an epic swarm of bees" but you wouldn't say "wow, man, that was epic."
Hate to brag, but I've heard that a few times...
Have to smile while reading this thread, it certainly has taken my mind of this miserable weather.
I must tell you I was young arriving in this country I was amazed at the informality people used toward others. My parents had certain friends for many years, they were still addressed as Mr and Mrs, only family members were called by their first name and as a student I was addressed as Miss.
It was surprising to be introduced by an adult with my first name to the child that was with him or her.
I only insist my wife address me as Mr. ^_^
I hate it (oops, I did it again) when little kids address me by my first name. I do not hesitate to tell their mothers I feel more comfortable if they address me as Mrs. V.
Some business world ones that used to drive me nuts when I worked for my former employer:
"bandwidth" - speaking of employee ability or time, as in "do we have enough bandwidth for that?" when what they really meant was do we have enough personnel with enough extra time to take this on?
"going forward/on a going forward basis"
"game on!" - said by a particularly idiotic senior executive who hit "reply all" to an email that had gone out to the whole company, when he really just meant it to go to one or two particular individuals. The whole email was full of stuff like that.
There were more but I can't remember them all right now. I just remember thinking at the time, that Scott Adams' "Buzzword Bingo" would have been fun to play in most all-employee meetings we had.
Yes - 'going forward' is a ridiculous one that is always used in financial statements. Duh.
While driving with DS when he got his permit he asked his father " Do I take a right left or go straight?" His father replied, " The road is never straight, just go forward and you'll be fine." ^_^
What the heck is a "blessed day" and how do I not take "No offense, but..."?

I hate 12 pm and 12 am; properly it is 12 noon and 12 midnight.
DH hates "as a whole"
Actually---I know I say that often---bad habit! Terms in education also drove me crazy---PPT--ADD -- ADHD--and that was 10 years ago---I'm sure they have more now.
wow you guys were busy yesterday
not much else to do in this weather
Like, speaking of like, there is an area where we should use it more. Like also means to prefer, appreciate etc. .We may like french fries, the color purple, etc., but we don't really love french fries or a color. Love is over used.
I guess this the counterpart to over using hate
Carrie, What about an epic poem or saga? We don't say it was a poem that is epic.
Currently the phrases that, like, drive me nuts are:
Flood warning in effect...
More rain in the forecast....
Severe thunderstorm warning...
P A N D E M I C
teee heee
I re read my "sweetie" dear statement and probably confused many.
I dont like being addressed in that way by people I dont know who are in a professional exchange situation.
Thats all.
Now that I think of it.
We are of German extraction and rarely use indearments with eachother.
NOW all you sweetie pie Germans ,dont get on my back about that.
Its just the way our family is.

I would have to say, currently, mine are:
heat alert in effect
no rain yesterday, today or tomorrow
record-breaking heat temps
Love, hate and great are all overused.
i hate that!
"How cute is that?" drives me nuts - I don't know; how cute is it???
Also the lose/loose epidemic. I have seen 'loose' used instead of 'lose' in newsprint, on the CNN ticker, and even on a hand-written note by a manager who happened to have a PhD in engineering! I want to scream every time I see that.
A few more:
'I personally...'
'With all due respect' - not sure if that one was mentioned.
'Don't go there'
"talk to the hand" is, as far as I'm concerned, a cop-out to avoid reality.
We have a rule about not using curse words, whatever or stupid in the house. Whatever is very dismissive. I can't say that these words never get uttered but we try to avoid them. We always say there's another dollar in the pot, but no one ever pays up!
"Don't start with me." DH says that to me sometimes!! Grrrrr.
Some words & phrases are over used----but maybe because they say it so well---language is in constant flux, & I'm glad---too boring, otherwise.
Yes. Possibly. Thank you.
