Here is my house broody.. She is setting on Serama eggs... today is day 19
Why is it that I'm sitting on pins and needles checking her hourly? Why is it so much more intense than a hatcher? I have Serama eggs in the hatcher, and I don't worry about them near as much..
This is my last of the last.. my bators are finally empty...
My turn to chew my nails...
Didn't you just pretty much tell me to relax? Nutmeg knows what she's doing? :o)
You've done this before.. i just lived thru the first one. A few more days & you'll have cute lil babies chirping as loud as mine are.
LOL and you expect me to practice what I preach????? LOL
I think it's cause it seems so final.. (last hatch)
I finally have a pip in the hatcher.. so at least I know they are alive.. These are late for Seramas.. I've had them all done by day 19 before.
I really want a few of this batch.. I love the ones they came from.. the calico color drives me crazy.
um.. well.. kinda.. in a way.. sorta yes.. but I guess i don't to. :) first hatch is hard enough but last hatch would be awful hard. *hugs* it'll be ok. Take lots of pictures. The more I hear you talk the more I think I need to not get my motorcycle so I can build another coop & get Seramas!
Nothin' mov'n over here either--although my (ZZ's) Serama are only on day 18. This is my last batch too. Although I have a Nankin in the basement brooding what must be Nankin/Japanese Bantam eggs.
She is in the top of a bale of shavings covered by the plastic.
Don't ask.
ZZ - I don't recommend chewing nails. It's very hard on your teeth. Your dentist would surely be dismayed. Also, you could poke a nail through your tongue, and that would hurt. Nails are best used in constructing coops. Be sure the nails have no lead content when you chew on them. Very unhealthy.
I don't think of it as your "last" hatch. I just think of it as the first hatch during your new phase of life. There will be many more hatches, you just have them on hold for a while.
Catscan - why is it your last batch? Are you going to become a trucker with ZZ? You could knit a lot of socks that way, team driving.
Also, please do not suffocate your chickens in shavings bags. I am sure they say on them somewhere "This is not a toy" and they have that creepy picture of a child inside a bag, just in case you don't get the idea. Well, that child picture could just as easily be a chicken. Warning: Do not let your chicken use this bag as a toy. :-)
Still nothing..........
Okay.. no chewing nails.. but I have to be away from the house today for work.. naturally, you watch.. they will start while I have to be away..
That is a good way to look at it Claire, and I appreciate it..
Wouldn't that be cool if Catscan would go with? I'd love that!!!
She said don't ask! LOL
Last hatch...Sure. The front of the truck would be the bator. The sleeper would be the pen, and the body would be the run. CHICKEN TRUCKEN!!! I can see it all now. And Catsy is right... Lay off of the nails. Hay
P.S. I just loved the way GreyKyttyn returned your advice. LOL Meow!!!
The nesting habits of the lesser crestless Nankin is deeply ingrained in its genome. Perhaps the results of a single nucleotide substitution? Far be it from me to interfere.
4 pips in the hatcher..
1 pip under the mom.. (not me)
gotta run...... I just knew it..
Oh gosh.. Haystack is my ditzy contageous? That was Claire dear. GOTCHA!!! I love it.. neener neener neener.. youuuu can't geetttt me!
Sorry to hear it is your last hatch i'm sure one day you will get the chance to do this again {:~)
After all once a chicken head always a chicken head LOL
Ha~Ha~Ha~Ha~ZZ as many hatches as you have had you should be a pro by now.
2 Babiez in the hatcher.. 2 pips
still only one pip under mom..
One black and white baby is just toooooooo cute! I wanna take it out and get pics..
I'm glad they're doing well so far! Pics pics pics!
ooo i wanna see the B&W baby!!! I just love mine.. sheheit is sooo adorable & likes to snuggle.
I can see a chicken pen on the back of the truck.. right where they put the cap boxes for explosives.. it "could" be done... extend the frame a bit.. add in a metal stud walled box.. some plastic lexon glass as a wind block.. some hardware wire.. You wouldn't have to buy food.. the vibrations off the truck would shake the eggs out of them already scrambled for you to eat! We hauled my rabbit 100 miles in a crate on the back of the truck.. he survived. I'm sure a chicken could too. Just don't go where it snows. :) The Chrome Shop mafia could most likely build it too.. They are even here in Joplin. You could visit my chickens while they work on the truck!
LOL You are too funny Greykyttyn.. I have a few "caretakers" standing in line already. It makes me feel good that so many are helping to support me through this.. I sure appreciate it.
Mom has 2 pips now.. she just sleeps.. must be nice..
I wanna take the 2 babiez out so bad, but they need to call their sisters out to come and join them.. they are taking their sweet time... a few of the eggs are not due till tomorrow.. so it's gonna be a long haul.
aaaaaaaah ha Long Haul.. LOL
ZZ One thing when you go on the road--get a good "tire knocker" can also be used as a "head knocker" LOL My trucker friends get me a couple of them. I practice swinging mine so I look like I know what to do with them. LOLOL
Mag light! Works beautifully.. DD style. :) trust me. I've knocked my brothers in the head a couple times with them by accident. A lil AA maglight can also work for self defense very well. Dad made sure we had both in the trucks at all times. Never know who you're gonna meet at 2 am on the side of the road that needs towed back to Freightliner.
Mine have decided to hide for the night.. no pictures tonight. They are all under mama.. which makes her look like a fat little piggy princess... but i love her anyways. I think it would be neat to put her in a cage with a plexi glass floor.. where i could take a picture looking up at all those lil babies tucked in under her.
That's right! I have pepper spray and a noggin knocker.. LOL
I gotta go see if I can get the babiez out for a quick photo
Yep That Mag lite Will put a knot on a head LOL
Hey Wren my BIL was a Trucker and he had one of those kept it behind the seat LOL
Y'all are scaring me! I don't want anything bad to happen to our dear ZZ!
Claire out on the road you have to be careful My Bil was going all over the united states and you have to just have safety in mind is all.
No different than when you go on and extended trip you have safety in mind.
Truckers are on the road sometimes for weeks at a time and are going to places they have never been and don't know the people there so yes safety is a must.
My Bil has been in every state but Alaska and Hawaii it's a cool thing to do my Sister went with my BIL on some trips and she really loved going.
Nothing like seeing the beauty of this country from the seat of a semi
Okay.. this is a broody mom thread.. a chick thread.. I rather not talk truckin here.. please.. It's on my mind enough.. There is a time and a place for everything..
Broody mom has 3 empty eggshells.. but I can't see babiez except for some feet with their lil heads and bodiez up in mom's feathers.. LOL
I have 4 babiez from the hatcher.. 1 has leg problems..
I gotta run to work.. will be back..
Sorry zz I'm on My Space and other sites that are chatty so i tend to do that "Sorry" being around chickens 24/7 like i'am you like talking about other stuff sometimes. LOL
But i never tire of helping folks and seeing new breeds and welcoming new folks to the world of chickens.
Wish you luck in your new Job
Now back to the chicks {:~)
Sorry ZZ. :o(
Yes i see them "How Cute" Congratulations!
One of these things is not like the other...
(I suspect the chicken had an affair with the milkman. Or is it the grain man?)
I can hear it now:
Roo: Look at that chick. It looks nothing like me! What have you been up to?
Hen: Honey, all our babies are special....
Roo: Don't you go using your hen ways to trick me. I know something's up!
Hen: But remember your great grandmother who had that liaison with a buff orpington?
Roo: You mean Bessie? Well...yeah, but what does that have to do with it?
Hen: Of course, you are carrying some of her genes, and now they're showing up in your children!
Roo: Uhhh.....but.....uhhhh....oh......
Hen: And Bessie had that fling with that Leghorn too. Not to mention that French rooster. She was a looker! Just like you, honey, you're such a handsome roo!
Roo: Golly gee, you're making me blush now. I better go hunt a worm....
Hen: (wipes brow with feather) Whew....
Hen: Maby he has a good idea.. hunt a worm.. or find a slug.. yeah, that's it.. I'd find that slug and and stop all those slime trails..
Roo: What is that evil look in her eye? Why does she smile?
What a story Ha~Ha~Ha~Ha
I guess the final count is 14... I'm not positive.. I haven't gotten the broody up yet and I honestly don't know how many eggs were under her.
I do know that 10 hatched from a batch of 14 Shipped Serama eggs!! I am thrilled. This is the best hatch rate I've ever gotten from Shipped Serama eggs..
Free range eggs are stronger! Nothing can replace good ol dirt and bugs...
Thank you for your support Greykyttyn.. That was fun.
Claire & Wren too!
Haystack.. What's your favorite color? How many Seramas can fit in a suitcase?
Catscan I hope you can come see them today..
I'm goin on vacation so I might not get pics on right away.. bye guyz
And I missed it!
congrats ZZ
I saw them! ZZ is popping with Serama....which is no easy feat. And they are tiny.
ZZ'sTops--don't you love to see them strut?
I never had success with serama eggs. My Dutch banties do well though.
Serama are very difficult to hatch...and they go TACy if you even look at them let alone ship them. They do have a lethal gene from their Japanese Bantam ancestory, but that doesn't really explain it. Darlene Thompson recommends incubating them on their sides and always, if you possibly can, using a broody--but even then, if I get two out of twelve to hatch I am pleased.
So ZZ's hatch is really good--
ZZ is the serama expert now....we must bow before her....
The Serama Gramma I wanna be the Serama Gramma.. Can I be the Serama Gramma??? LOL
I love Seramas!
I promise pics as soon as I can... Krystal is gonna be here today.. The Serama babiez are coming out eating and drinking... Mom lets me handle them... she is a great mom.. I love her.
Today is Day 1 of What I did My Summer Vacation...
Play with Chickens... Eat berries.... Pick Green Beans......... eat more berries........
Serama Gramma they are beautiful!
Way to go Serama Gramma!
Today I made rhubarb ginger jam and played with Marshmallow. :-)
