Easy Fruit Tree Suggestion Please

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi,

I would like to plant a memorial tree in my yard for a family member that has passed on. This was my husband's brother so I want to plant something he would like. I was thinking of a plum or nectarine or something along those lines - but I want something pretty foolproof since I think it would make him feel worse if it didn't thrive. Any suggestions for San Diego? I've only had two experiences with fruit trees; a lemon tree that is doing pretty well and producing fruit, and a mandarin orange that didn't make it all after 3 years with lots of tlc. I want to plant it in the same general area as the lemon tree which will get full hot sun. We're also water rationing now, so something not as needy for water would be great. I'm having to save recycled water in a bucket to keep the lemon alive which is a big pain.

Thanks, Christina

How about persimmon? The fruit is delicious and the tree is beautiful! Figs also are gorgeous and easy!

Do pomegranites count? It is a bush, but a beauty!
You should be able to grow citrus, oranges and grapefruit should do well there. Nectarines, plums, and even avocados should grow for you too. (Some people call avocados fruit!)
If he had a sense of humor, maybe you'd consider some type of a nut tree. Walnuts grow here, and there are others too. I'm thinking macadamia nuts or even almonds. Last trip up the I-5, saw farmers ripping out their almonds and planting pomegranites instead. Then there are figs. I'd say persimmons, but darn it, Rob beat me to it. : )
Just a thought or three.
So sorry for your loss. Lost my Dad, (Trois also a DG member) this past Sept. His favorite plant was a Pride of Barbados. I've been trying to spread them all over as they are lovely plants, and people all over the world have planted them in his memory. What a beautiful way to remember a loved one.
Hope whatever you decide to plant, brings you joy when you see it, and it reminds you of your BIL.
My heart and prayers are with your family as you grieve.

I have seen Figs growing wild all over CA.

Central Valley, in the Coastal Range, the foothills of the Sierra and the central /south coastal areas. No extra water needed.

The only place they don't grow well is in the desert, high in the mountains and along the coast from Santa Cruz northward.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I will take my list to the nursery and see what looks good.

Happy Fourth everyone!
