Anyone know which cicada this is? I got some great picture of a moult and I'd like to add them to bugfiles.

This appears to be one of the so-called 'dog-day' cicadas that have a much shorter life cycle (usually 2-5 years) than that of the well-known periodical cicadas (13 or 17 years); it may be in the genus Tibicen - see http://tinyurl.com/5ed84m for images and more information.

I guess I'll check with my guy at Clemson and see if they can confirm. Thanks!

Truly wonderful photos. Thanks for sharing. I am so impressed with the pictures taken by some of the DGers. How cool that you got to see this. Darn those clients! Wait, the client may have "paid for" the camera you used, so I guess we'll un-darn them. :)

Thanks .. here is another extreme closeup .. 8.2 mb .. I'm curious about that white stringy stuff in the upper right .

The white 'strings' that appear to originate within the brown shell of the nymph are the old linings of the cicada's tracheal tubes that conducted air/oxygen to its tissues.

Thanks! I didn't have a clue as to what it was.

Wow! What did its breath smell like?!! ^_^ That is one ugly bug.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Lol .. but there are some amazing colors! I was looking really hard at the top view to see if there was a "suture" line on the newly moulted one that allows for the splitting of the old "skin"? when it's ready to moult and on the hard parts you can see it .. just barely.

Now I just realized how they got the idea to make those Aliens movies -- they've watch Cicadas molting!!! LOL.

Nah .. H.R. Giger is responsible for the Aliens Movie .. search his name in google images .. his artwork is astonishing and scary.
