I have never seen an ant with a different colored body like this... is it a specific type or maybe just due to a certain time of year.

This is a wingless wasp in the family Mutillidae; commonly called 'velvet ants.' It likely is in the genus Dasymutilla - see http://tinyurl.com/m4gjqf for an example.
