I always did admire those, but I have never tried growing one.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't think they would come back in the spring in your zone. They do come back here and every year they plant gets stronger.........and is very fragrant.

Medford, NJ

wow, never saw that before. The flowers are the little curly cues?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

They will grow and twine around as far up as they can go............she is about 11 feet high right now.............but they die back in our zone 9 winters..........they do have all curly cues ^__^ (the blooms that is)

(Zone 1)

Gail, that is lovely! I have wanted to try the Vigna caracalla plant for a long time but never see them around down here. I wonder if it's too hot, too wet for them to survive in Florida? hmm ... I just looked in PF and it shows a couple of areas in Fla where folks are growing it. I think I might do some checking around.

You should add a couple of pic's to PF: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1884/

Lin, the first year it sits in a pot and does nothing!! The second year it blooms great and from then on it never stops blooming. I have had several people here tell me that their corkscrew vines are planted in the ground and never bloom. (I think they must like to be protected with a blanket in the winter over the pot as the plants dies back anyway).........and they must like to be rootbound. Mine is in a pot with a 24" diameter.

You know I can't work plant files (LOL).............I never know the botanical names and can't find anything with a common name...........

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

wow, that is such a cool plant, never seen it before.

an interesting and uniquely beautiful plant!

I had three seeds to Vigna caracalla once. Planted one and it grew like wildfire, but I lost it over this past winter. I've lost all my seeds, too. I'm sure they're around somewhere, but I haven't found them yet. If I do though, I'll grow more. Gail, you should harvest the seeds from that. They're highly sought after!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know where the seeds are from this wonderful Mother plant............the seed was given to me and that is how I started her...........will have to go look at her closely..............

Yes, keep a watch because lots of people would love to have seeds from it. Me, included, since I can't find my other seeds! LOL

Here's a couple pictures from the plantfiles showing the seedpods forming:

Does anyone grow this vine? It was labeled " Wine red Vining Gloxenia" .That's all I know about it. It was not in bloom at the greenhouse this spring, and it was marked down to a dollar, so ,of course, I had to buy it. I like it and wonder if it would grow indoors next winter. Lou

Lou, that plant is gorgeous! I had to go google and found this: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53769/ Is this your plant? It's not a gesneriad but has the common/nickname of Creeping Gloxinia!

Then I googled for images of creeping gloxinia: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=images+of+creeping+gloxinia&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=CvdDSrjROJmetwe-v-XUDg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=878059809

I really like this plant!

(Zone 1)

Plant Files actually has listings for 3 different ones: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/b/Scrophulariaceae/Lophospermum/none/cultivar/0/

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks! That last one is it. It says I can take cutting and over winter them. Great. Thanks so much for your help. Lou

(Zone 1)

Lou, you are welcome ... it's a lovely plant!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, I need to be sharing mine, Phoebe.....................how do you keep your leaves from turning brown? I keep mine outside and today was 99 degrees with 110 heat index and tomorrow will be a heat index of 115 degrees..................

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

This is what was blooming for me this morning (yesterday morning now... just got home from work).

The rain has slowed everything down this summer, but now things are beginning to happen. My first amaryllis popped open & it is a douzy! It is as big as a salad plate so I guess it liked the rain

this is the first year I have grown hollyhocks-Charter's doubles. So far, there are white, peach, very dark red & a spectacular pink. Love pink!

The lillies are my favorites. disappointing that the hybridizers lost the wonderful fragrance by crossing orientals with everything else, however, they are gorgeous.
I have Caa Blanca starting to bud up. Their scent is amazing.

Oh........indoors may be the answer

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Rain! Since the weather has been so hot, the corkscrew vine quit blooming and is now producing seeds everywhere............take a gander at this first bean.
