can anyone ID this buckwheat?

Hollywood Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

I have this buckwheat growing in my yard but don't know what it is. Anyone have an idea? I have looked through PLant Files and nothing looked similar. Thanks!

I'm not sure what it is, but the leaves don't look at all like any of the buckwheats I've seen (Eriogonum species) so unless you're using buckwheat to refer to a different plant genus I don't think yours is buckwheat.

This is a picture of Eriogonum Fasciculatum that is growing in my yard with similar leaves, and there are pics in plant files showing these leaves. To me the leaves looks the same but the shape and color of the bloom is different.

hugeprops, try going to some of the CA native sites, they might have photos good enough to compare to yours:

http://cnps.org/

Hope this helps. I love buckwheat, but I haven't seen too many varieties. Yours looks similar to ours, going by memory (it's on the edges of our property so I don't look at it closely too often).

Thanks KaperC. No luck yet but those are great sites, thank you

Hugeprops, I took a close look at our buckwheat today and it is very similar to what you have in that picture. It looks like Eriogonum fasciculatum var. foliolosum to me.

Ecrane, this common CA buckwheat is what grows on the roadsides/hillsides here - the foliage is very like rosemary. I planted E. giganteum (aka St. Catherine's Lace) in the garden, which has proper leaves and always confuses me when I see it starting to regrow in the spring, thinking some other plant has invaded my beautiful buckwheat!

I guess all the ones I've seen up here have the regular sorts of leaves, I've never seen that one. I'll have to keep my eye out for it though, I love buckwheats!

St Catherine is just starting to bloom and I just love looking at her/it. :-) I was driving home a couple of weeks ago and the wild buckwheat was in full bloom on the hillsides - it was glorious. I started a thread on Garden Talk called 'An Ode To....' hoping others would describe things that touched them in a special way, but it didn't take off. I wished I could write a poem describing how beautiful it was. Funny how some 'mundane' things get to us, isn't it?

Our common b/w partially hides a particularly ugly (to me) strip of cactus we have no hope of eradicating.

DH says it doesn't look like any kind of buckwheat he has seen. He asked if it was ironwood or chamise (sp)?
He says it really doesn't look like buckwheat. He knows buckwheat.
Okay, showed DH the second photo and he says that one is the Greater California Buckwheat, and that there is also a lessor type. If that 2nd photo is from the plant in the first photo that is what ya got.
Great honey producing plant. First flower DH ever gave me was a heart shaped cluster of buckwheat. He wasn't being romantic, he wanted to show me the nectar content. Still blooming here on the slopes on our farm. If it is cool enough and I get up early enough I'll go take photos of them. I know I have a photo of them prior to blooming, and one when they had just started to bloom.
KC is right about the 2nd photo. They are very common in these parts. DH sees them in your area all the time. Not sure what that first photo is of, can you take a close up of the flowers?
