DL Hoyas Coming!

(Zone 1)

Doug, I wind cuttings around in a circle fashion and put a rock on top to hold them down to keep them from springing back up and out.

Y'all -- Michael Jackson is being reported dead.

(Zone 1)

Farrah Fawcett passed away today. Hadn't heard about Michael Jackson.

(Zone 1)

Just googled Michael Jackson and found this: http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/06/25/michael-jackson-reportedly-hospitalized-after-suffering-cardiac-arrest/ I've had the news on for the past hour and haven't heard anything about him, just the Farrah news.

I was never a huge Jackson fan but he did have talent, that's for certain.

Lin, I love the rocks on the plants.

That one at 1 o'clock is knocking me out.
A real looker!

Yes, MJ has passed away. Farrah too.

(Zone 1)

Alison, That's one I got in a trade last year DG'er Bmedel/Brenda, labeled Hoya aff. finlaysonii? I googled to find it and PF came up but I see there it's called 'Nova'. I love the foliage on this one, have no clue what the blooms look like though. This plant wasn't doing real well awhile back and I took it out of the mix and put it in water and left it for about six months ... just repotted it back in my mix a couple of days ago ... we'll see, it may be one that just doesn't like me.

I started googling and found these pictures: http://www.megalaster.com/gallery/en/f/Hoya_finlaysonii_Nova Wow! I sure hope this is the one I have! I will be waiting patiently, or not so ^_^ for signs of blooms!

YOWSa !!

I do hope that's it; wow it's gorgeous.

Way to go - Lin! You racked on that one.

(Zone 1)

Alison, I just hope I can keep it happy and alive. I received it May 2008 ... you'd think it would be going crazy by now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that eventually (hopefully soon) it will get happy and start putting out lots of new growth. Geesh, sometimes plants just think differently than I want them too. ^_^ I've threatened to start singing to it so maybe it will settle down and start liking it's Florida home! It came from the beautiful state of Idaho so maybe it's just been homesick for the past year?

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Lin, Those flowers are gorgeous! I hope it grows madly for you and produces many flowers because I want a cutting!

Sarah

(Zone 1)

Sarah, I'm hoping that's the one I have, the foliage sure looks like it but blooms will tell for sure ... if and when the thing ever decides to grace me with blooms!

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

My DL Hoyas arrived today!! They are gorgeous. I sure hope I can get them to all root. Here is the box and bag they arrived in.

Some of my cuttings I dipped in rooting hormone gel and put in water and some were so long, I put in this bus pan from Sam's with holes I drilled in the bottom and potting soil added. I just needed something bigger than a pot but not so deep as a really big pot would be. I will see if this works okay.

Pamela, they look great! Wow! Some of y'all ordered bunches of cuttings! Mine came today too, but I only ordered 3 cuttings total ... 2 of patella and 1 of anulata. I had actually forgotten that I ordered anulata and thought it got put in my package by mistake, so I contacted the co-op host for the name of who it belonged to so I could mail it out Monday. I got a return e-mail with a copy of my original order showing that I did order anulata ... had totally forgotten about that one! Duh, I am old and blonde ... getting older by the second, and blonder when I remember to buy hair color! ^_^

I really was so excited about patella ... just had to have that one since seeing a photo Carol posted awhile back!

My cuttings ...

H. megalaster is one I dare not give advice on....it is one of the most difficult I have ever grown. It seems to pout if you mist it, pout if you don't...I have mine where air current is available and it seems to be happy!

PamelaQ...the only thing i would say about your bus pan is that sometimes cuttings need some kind of air movemnet to be really happy...that's what i find, anyway. DLs plants all grow in a huge shade house with lots of breeze...

Mine did not arrive yet. Hopefully tomorrow. The PO will call me if it comes in (we are a small town here) I have no idea how many or what I ordered!!!

Rocks are great to hold plants down....

(Zone 1)

Carol, I got the "rock holding a vine down" idea from a post you made on this forum a year or so ago!

Shepherdstown, WV

Mine came today, too! Wow, what a difference from last years! Does he put his labels on just like Ted does, so that if you're reading the label the cut end is down? Hopefully so, as that's the way I planted them!
Keeping my fingers crosssed.....

On most cuttings, if you look really close with a magnifying glass or something, you can see a tiny bump which will show up on the top of the node. Other will produce tiny roots on the bottom of each node (like lacunosa)...or you can lay them down flat, or put them in any old way...doesn't really matter. They will root...

San Francisco, CA

Mine came today!
What a great bunch of cuttings- all large and healthy. I used to hear about DL's cuttings being so big and generous, but in recent orders I hadn't seen much evidence of that. This time is different, they all are quite large and very healthy looking! I guess that alone made it worth the wait.
I do hear you unsatisfied guys though, there are so many people ordering from DL- I don't think he has anything (except for very new, undistributed species) that you can't trade for or buy from any number of US sources more easily.

Shepherdstown, WV

Mark,
I so agree about the health and length of the cuttings! This is only the second time I've participated and we had the unfortunate incident last year, but last year's cuttings were so much smaller than what I expected. I'm amazed at the length of these!

Kelly

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Wow! cuttings look great and huge. Maybe next one I might get in on it.

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Thanks for the rock idea Lin. I'll give that a try to see if I can more easily develop roots on that pricier than most cutting. Carol if you have trouble with H. megalaster in Hawaii, there is virtually no way I'll be able to grow it in VT, but I will give it the old college try. I did receive one miserable looking cutting to go with the great ones in the bag, and if I end up with anything out of H. engleriana it will be the biggest plant miracle of all time. It was around 8 inches long with only a few yellow leaves left on the stem. I cut it into three pieces and stuck it in a pot - not much hope there.

Doug

My box was waiting for me when I got home last night---YAY!!! The cuttings were very long, as other people noted, and only a couple looked a little dry and wrinkled, but I popped them into a warm water bath and within an hour or so they perked right up...I'm going to leave them soaking today and then pot them up tonight when I get home...

Many thanks to all involved for making this happen...I think we probably owe Carol thanks too---I may be wrong, but it's my impression that if Carol hadn't gotten on the phone and actually talked to DL when she did, we might still be waiting on our boxes...so, Thanks Carol :)

H megalaster is one of the 'non-performers' of my shipment but I'm still optimistic.

Here are my cuttings...in Hydroponics...has been 100% successful from the start...6 months ago. I add them to this system and forget about them for a couple of weeks to one month.

Inside system...have to mist these often since I run my A/C all of the time.

Joni,

Do you put more than one cutting in each netted pot? How many do you think you've rooted this way? I just rooted an elliptica in an AeroGarden I recently picked up and couldn't be more thrilled as attempts to root this before failed!

Kelly

York, PA(Zone 6b)

Kelly,

I put as many as I can fit...depending on the leaf size...4-8? They are packed in there for sure.
I've rooted upwards of 100 since January...even the ones who just decide to die for no reason.
I put them in here and let them be...I've revived them all.
H. elliptica is one I got from DL...am very hopeful this one will be just fine.

PamelaQ,
What is the hoya with the veins in the leaves (the one at 1:00?) - I love those leaves. Very nice.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
If this is the one you are talking about, it is IML0544 Hoya callistophylla. I love the veins in this one also.

When did you become the 'queen of freedom of speech', Carol?
All I said was that I would like to be a part of this coop next time.

Thanks, PamelaQ, that hoya sure is a beauty, but then, aren't they all? (:o)
Thanks again,

I'm not a frequent poster (rarely have time), but just wanted to post to say I received my cuttings Friday and they looked WONDERFUL! They were a long time coming, but worth the wait (for me). This is my third time ordering and I have many great plants now. I should post some pictures of some of my "Australia" plants.

My new cuttings are now happily ensconced in my cloning machine and seem to be pretty happy right now.

Hope everyone has good luck with their cuttings!
