Ipomoea hochstetteri
Hi Sylvia! I am no help as I have never heard of this plant until you started this thread. Do you know where the plant originated? Africa? I did a google search on the internet and got very little information about this plant. Where did you get the seeds originally?
never heard of it either. curious to know more as very little info on it.
Hello;
I have seen it listed as Ipomoea transvaalensis; if you google you will find seed and photos.
I tried to germinate all my seed, some germinated but died of rot. I can only assume it is sensitive to moisture; it's native to South Africa and there is a main seed company that collects different species don't know if they have any spare in a small amount or could go and collect..
Thank you, that was great news Rareseedman.
Can you D-mail me the source, the main seed companyīs name, homepage??
Sylvia
Rareseedman, I found seeds on
http://www.dianeseeds.com/ipomoea-transvaalensis.html
and have order seeds right away, thank you very much.
Sylvia
I found my seeds rotted, see my germination thread..what makes this species so special?
It's a shame I germinated or attempted to all of mine I would have sent them as the species never appealed to me. What happened to yours.
Sorry, they rotted.
What special, I donīt know but I loved the flowers and anymore the orange seeds. Only because of that. :o)
And it was an handy plant not so big like other Ipo.
I really like the species of Ipomoea more than the hybrids.
Maybe this time try to have lots of sharp drainage and only water when needed, you might get more blooms but I am not an expert and have not grown the species, maybe it likes it hot and dry like South Africa
I grew this species last year in a garden at school--it loves warmer weather and grew so aggressively I had to cut it down early--it sends runners along the surface of the ground questing in all directions in addition to going up on the sticks I provided for it. It is not hard to grow in the right climate and is a weed, evidently, in Florida. Maybe the problem with it in northern Europe and the UK is that the summers are too cool. It only takes off when it is above 80 F or so. Flowers are small but pretty, as are the bright orange seeds, but this plant need room--lots of room.
congminglaoshi, I grow it in Sweden, Scandinavia for a couple of years. But I grow it in my porsch, which have glass windows and doors around, so I can get it fairly hot in here. But it was an nice fairly handle plant in the pot. And the flowers they where like ordinary Morning Glorys in size. But I never get any seeds. It flower in late summer.
