I've looked on the "Whats this caterpillar" website, but still can't find this guy. Can anyone help me and my kids out with an ID?
CLOSED: Caterpillar ID please
I believe that this is a larva of a moth in the family Arctiidae known as the agreeable tiger moth, Spilosoma congrua - see http://tinyurl.com/l9sqnf for an image; an adult moth may be seen at http://tinyurl.com/lkwd9r
Thank you so very much! It's been in our butterfly net/cage that we raised painted ladies in, but I don't know what this guy eats so, I'm sure it will be very happy to be returned to the wild now.
And it certainly has been agreeable. We were afraid it might sting me, but I took a chance for the sake of the photo. I wonder how it got it's name, "Agreeable". Do you know?
Boy, you've got me there - I was just discussing this and other curiously named species ("unexpected cycnia," "dubious tiger moth," "intractable quaker," etc. etc. with my wife - perhaps some entomologists were arguing about what to name it, and came up with a compromise that was agreeable...
