CLOSED: Bugs on Arizona Ash

Decatur, TX

I went out at night and found these brown bugs all over the trunk of my Arizona Ash tree. What are they and are they harmful?

Maybe - they're stinkbugs. And they do seem to resemble the Brown Marmorated Stinkbug Halyomorpha halys, a recent invasive species with potential to become a serious pest in this country.

But there's not enough detail in the picture to say what they are, and there are similar species to the new pest species. Look for white bands on the antennae, or maybe you can get better pictures. I don't know if these bugs are supposed to have made it Texas or not, but you might contact your agricultural extension office.

Thank you claypa. I now know they are stinkbugs but I believe they are just the regular brown ones. I don't see the white on the antennas. Maybe that is what has been eating my turks cap. Do you know how to get rid of them? I prefer something other than a pesticide. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Sorry, I don't but maybe someone else will have ideas about contol. Some are beneficial and eat other insects, it would be good to know exactly what you have there - if you're able to get closer pictures it might be possible.

If you cannot obtain and submit a clearer image, I suggest that you take some specimens to the Wise County office of Texas A&M university's Cooperative Extension service (see http://wise-tx.tamu.edu/). If no one there is able to assist in identification, they should be able to forward the specimens to the appropriate university office.
