Saw an interesting Lily Bloom at the IRLS Show

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

While at the Iowa Regional Lily Society Annual Show, I had some free time to walk around. At the entrance to the Dome of the Botanical Center in Des Moines they had a vase of oriental/orienpet blooms.

This one was in the arrangment and am dying to know what everyone thinks of this!

Here is a closer 'look' at this flower.

It looks diseased, or is it just me? Can't say I would run out and buy it. Lol. What did you think? How was the show? Did you show anything?

We all agreed that it looked virused to us. To be honest this IS one I could live with, is that how it starts? We find 1 virused bloom that is acceptable, even attractive to us and pretty soon the uneducated flower buyers are demanding that broken coloring for their gardens. The Rembrandt tulips were virused but once people saw them they went crazy for them.

I took a few stems, it was a smaller show only 51 stems displayed, but what a variety! I was too busy or moody or distracted to take pictures though!

It looked virused to me also. I will say it's interesting and could probably 'grow on me' over time. I find it hard to believe you didn't take pictures at the show. How did your stems do?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Must admit that I could live with that lily too. It sure has a wild look to it with the wavy edges and all. The broken color is fairly symetrical and does have a certain appeal.

Will enjoying a lily like that get you drummed out of the lily ranks?? ;)

2 Blues(1st), 2 reds(2nd) and 1 yellow(3rd)

That bloom was HUGE, you can see that the tepal is about 6 inches by itself.

Good job!!

Where did that funky bloom come from?

I still think that it is an odd place to find a stem like that.

You did really great Sue. That's a good showing of ribbons.

I think I caused a misunderstanding. . . . The Botanical center had a vase of these flowers at the door to the dome, in honor of the Lily Show maybe, I really don't know.

They were not a part of the Lily Show, however, I have been to several shows including the NALS Show in Wisconsin and I saw lilies with color breaking (OT's mostly) on the show tables. They were not disqualified either!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

interesting, isn't it?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

You didn't cause a misunderstanding ~ just curious.

Great showing Sue!

Thanks gals, Wanda did quite well also, she got the same ribbons as I did! She had a great stem of Iowa Rose.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Really now, did she? :)

(Sue) South Central, IA(Zone 5a)

OK, OK, she got her own ribbons, but they were the same rank as mine!

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Congrats to both of you on your ribbons! I would like to see a list of what got what, if you don't mind. I assume yous keep track of that, don't yous?

I'm in the agnostic camp regarding that "virused" lily. I don't think I have ever seen color breaking to white caused by a virus. Just not sure, 'cause I am not know-it-all here, only a know-it-some. It must be a hybrid, maybe with L. auratum (a fairly easy accomplishment), to obtain its size. L. auratum is quite susceptible to viruses, and I question if it would grow to such a size if it were virused. However, all speculation here.

Wonder what Pard thinks.

P.S. I like it.

It's tough for me to tell if the color is breaking to the pink or to the white. It's a weird one. I still wouldn't buy it ;)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

What I noticed is the absence of color 'pools' that you usually see in virused lilies. It intrigues me that the pink/white pattern is about the same between the 2 blooms and even the papillae in the white areas still have a strong red color. Very interesting.

The show was sub prime as far as quality, but here is what i got for what I took. (I made a mistake earlier, only had 4 stems)

Royal Love LA and Cancun asiatic - Blues
Lavender Ballerina asiatic - Red
London asaistic - Yellow it had a pretty crooked stem! Looked like a Harry Lauder's walking stick . . . really!

Two of the stems I cut didn't open, I plan on taking one to Springfield this weekend.

Wanda
Iowa Rose asiatic and L. regale' species - Blues that regale perfumed the whole room!
Lollipop asiatic and Burnt Orange martagon hybrid - Reds
Aphrodite double asiatic - Yellow

I'm not sure what to think about that lily with the broken color. I'm not sure that it fits the virused condition. I agree the coloring is wrong for that, but the markings were different on each tepal. Kinda like the broken colors on some iris.

There is something funky about that lily. I would say something is wrong with it but don't know if it is virused. Note that the petals are deformed with all those lobes.

Congrats on the ribbons, llilyfan and Wanda! One of these days I will have an Iowa Rose, maybe even later this year! The Lily Nook on line catalog keeps beckoning me... I clicked through the whole thing last night (wiping up the drool here...)
