Fairy Garden... Off Topic

South, TX

I finally worked on my Fairy house today. The gnome is there right now, but the fairies will move in tomorrow. This is under the pink Turk's Cap forest around my fountian.

Sally: That is the cutest! I had never heard of fairy gardens until I joined DG. Where in the world did you find the little house? Please post another picture when you add the fairies!

Lin, my husband brought the wood back from his family property last year. This is a photo I took in early spring, Texas Bluebonnets. Same wood. Interesting piece.

I was going to say that the wood looks like pine or cedar trunks or driftwood ....but I really thought that you had bought a house made of the wood, not that you made it yourself. Great job! I was paging thru my sister in laws garden catalog last night and they have a little door you can buy to set into the bottom of a tree trunk, to make it llok like elves live in there. Too cute.

One can find driftwood like this on the beach, but bigger pieces are rare. You need to look in a more natural area, like where there are still trees and natural dunes. Most of the coast in my state is too developed, but there are a few places that haven't been, and that is where I look. The pieces I have are thin, though. Nothing big and chunky that you could make into something like a fairy house...here is a pic of a great piece I found in Cape May, I hang my smaller plants from it, though I had to take most off so that you could see it in the photo.

Neat driftwood! My piece is a heavy piece of Mesquite tree, well known here in Texas! I did buy the door and windows. Here is the package.

Where did you get the package from?

I got it at Hobby Lobby.

Sally: I do remember seeing that piece of Mesquite wood in one of your photo's! I love the looks of that wood ... it does look a lot like weathered driftwood. I have a couple of real small pieces of driftwood ... years ago I would use them in silk flower arrangements. When we are out in our boat I am always seeing really nice driftwood on islands in the Intracoastal waterway but they are usually waaay too huge to pick up and carry off! Mesquite is a hardwood like cedar ... would love to find a nice aged piece like your log with the bluebonnets! And, that piece for your fairy house is perfect for that project!

I've heard folks talk about Hobby Lobby, and it sounds like they carry some great stuff! I wish we had one close by, but the nearest store to me is an hour away in St. Augustine.
