Denton, TX(Zone 8a)

OK, who's got stuff blooming that would have been posted in the May flowers thread but now that it's the middle of June....?

Here's my first sunflower of the season:

This isn't really a flower bloom, but it's still pretty. It's an okra bloom on my Clemson Spineless okra.

I have Kniphofia Lola blooming well. This plant has been in my nursery bed for two years now and is just now blooming for the first time. Worth the wait and now I have to figure out how to move it =)!

Carlo, what kind of sunflower is that? It is beautiful.

Here is one of mine. It's head has already been harvested for feeding the birds this winter, but it sure was pretty while it lasted.

Loonie1, it was in a pack for last year of mixed sunflower seed, that was marketed as a hedgerow or fence line pack of tall sunflowers. They were all different colors and sizes, and I collected these seeds at the end of the year, because I liked the color. I labeled it as "oxblood," but I don't really know what it is.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i like that sunflower too. how tall is it and how long does it bloom? did it self seed any?

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Here in Texas, do sunflowers get a second planting the way tomatos do? Just currious as I have just come across an unopened packet of sunflower seeds.

PS>I like both of those sunflowers. CarolnTX, I love the idea of a sunflower hedgerow. How did it turn out?

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Carlo, I found a packet of "burgundy" sunflower seeds in, of all places, my local Target store. I hope mine turn out as lovely as yours.

hello terri in emory with the canna that i want. i too am planning a sunflower row next year. i am going to use the tall native ones. they do reseed and i plan on just removing the ones that i don't need.

Frisco, TX(Zone 8a)

StephanieTx, How do you get your cigar plant so thick and bushy? Do you pinch it back often (how much and when?) I have a new one I rescued from the clearance rack at Lowe's that is pretty lanky.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

stephanie that is not this year's picture, is it? i have that same plant but mine blooms late in sept. i think.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Teacup~This is the first year I've had this cigar plant. It was just one little spindly stem with about 6 leaves on it when I planted it after it survived the winter in my sunroom. I've not pruned it or pinched it back at all, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, all of these pics were taken last week. Most of them are new additions to my garden, so I have no idea when they're "supposed" to bloom. LOL I noticed a few days ago that I have a scape on my Blackberry Lily. Last year, they didn't bloom until late Aug or September. I'm blaming everything on the weather!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

well i'm going to be pouting that your cuphea blooms earlier than mine. as hot as it is i have missed several blooms.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a little batface cuphea that hasn't bloomed yet. I got it at the Arlington RU in April from aardvark, who grew it from seed for me. It's growing, but it hasn't bloomed yet.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i don't know what kind i have but it's hardy here even in a pot. looks like yours but for the 2 yrs. i;ve had it the thing blooms in aug./sept. maybe later. seems like i just get to liking it when the first freeze comes. your bat face is in the ground? how long have you had it?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, both this cigar plant and my batface cuphea are planted in the ground. I remember there being talk among a few here about whether or not their cigar plants survived the winter, but I can't remember who it was.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

that's good news. is it inside a wood fence? wondering what kind of shelter they had in the winter if any?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Mine are out in a bed with no protection from the elements. They get that full hot afternoon sun. They seem to be doing well if I can just keep them hydrated. I'm going to take cuttings this fall just in case and I'll mulch them heavily as well.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

My cigar plant didn't survive the winter from fall RU. I got this batface cuphea at a local store which says it is hardy to zone 9. Yes, I will take cuttings too!

My Batface Cuphea (that I planted at the same time as yours Stephanie) just started blooming. I'm on dial-up (whaaa!) or I would post a pic. I'm wondering if I can dig him up in the fall and overwinter him in a sunroom???

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

you know i think they have a winter drainage problem don't they?

Denton, TX(Zone 8a)

terri_emory, I didn't plant them as densely as I could have. But there were a bunch of mixed ones along my chainlink fence that ranged from two to six feet depending on the amount of sun...the further from the house, the taller they were. I think it worked great.

mamajack, yes, these were planted from seeds I collected last year, and they look like they're going to have seeds again this year. This one is about four and half feet tall, and I have another one coming in the vegetable garden, but it's not blooming just yet.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Anna...I don't have a batface...hint hint, if you are going to do cuttings for Oct RU. Lol!
My cigar plant got tall and lanky the first year, so I moved it and started pinching it back last year. It is putting out nicely and fuller too. It is also planted in full west sun against my foundation too.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I got the hint! I will try but it seems like I succeed less than 50% with cuttings. I like the way people list how many plants they have to trade. It would be a better way to know if there is a viable cutting to share. I usually promise and then stress about what is going to make it.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I checked my little batface cuphea this morning and it has some baby buds on it, so it should be blooming soon! The zexmenia are blooming like crazy. My rudbeckia (from Sheila) that I planted in April has buds on it, so it'll be blooming soon!! My John Fannick Phlox that I got from Anna (I think) in April also has a bud on it! The flower will probably be so heavy it'll pull the plant over! LOL
