I need landscaping ideas for a friend

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

One of my co-workers have this backyard that has tons of potential and needs some gardening help. I have the guts to tackle it with them, from the look of the picture, it is a small shady backyard, but no imagination and don't know a lot of plants. I don't know what the deal is with the grass in front of the tree, but behind the tree ivy has grown over a brick "wall." He has grape vines growing in front of and on the fence that are inundated with weeds, and to the far back-left is a wild blackberry vine. There's a box turtle who lives in their backyard also.

Crissyr, I am certainly not the one to answer your questions, but as a rock lover,,,the very first thing I would do is uncover that rock wall. How neat to have a rock wall in the backyard!

Does your friend have the means to start from scratch or is the budget limited? I would agree with M and get the wall uncovered first and get rid of the ivy to start. How much is he in love with the grape, blackberry and grass?

He hates the blackberry, wants to get rid of the ivy, and the grape needs to be identified before they make a decision. I'd like for them to keep the grass if it's not too shady as they have 2 small kids. He is extremely strapped on money. The wall definitely needs to be uncovered so we can see what we're working with. It was all 5' grass til about 2 weeks ago when he went out and mowed it all down.

Does he have pets besides the turtle? What kind of grass is it? Is there more to the yard than what we see? Sun/shade? Typical AL soil? Can we do a water feature?

Uncover the wall and pitch the ivy. Dig out the blackberry and pitch that, too.

As for plants, I would ask a turtle person and ask them what turtles CAN'T eat or live with and we can go from there.

No other pets, the turtle is wild, it's a box turtle, they're all over here, found dead on the roads everywhere. I guess it's partial shade from what I'm looking at. LOL I'm not getting that detailed, it's a little old house on a little lot, not worth it. I'm not getting that detailed with my own house (I know that's awful)

Not aweful, realistic. ^_^

Hmm...daylily, hosta, fuchsia, viburnum, daisy, mums, fern, iris, astible...

Evergreens...euphorbia maybe? Hellebore, dwarf pine, euonomus.

Here's the grass that he has:
