Background: Last fall a husky destroyed what was left of our flock... it killed 27 chickens.... leaving us with 11 hens. We were fine over most of the winter, but late winter, another dog killed more... and we're now down to 3 hens who aren't laying every day. So, I had already planned to buy new chicks this spring... when we sell eggs, everyone wants dark eggs, and my own personal preference is dark brown eggs... so, I planned on getting Cuckoo Marans, while researching them, I started reading about Black Copper Marans, and saw pictures of how dark their eggs were, and decided that I wanted those. Problem is, they're very expensive, and have to be purchased from individuals since they aren't a recognized Breed here in the US. So... after reading here, and elsewhere decided I was going to buy eggs and hatch my own. I bought the incubator, and started looking at where I wanted to buy my eggs and from whom. I started this thread about the hatch.... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/982534
I started the eggs so they would hatch over Memorial Weekend... it didn't go so well, I was hand turning, and we had electrical issues twice where the electric was out for hours.... not so good for chicks in eggs.... I ended up with 7 chicks, and I absolutely love them... but, I needed more than 7 new chicks..... so I bought more eggs... and they're in the incubator now. I also planned to order 20 barred rock pullets to arrive when this new batch was scheduled to hatch.
For whatever reason, I went to a chick/egg auction site Tuesday, and there before my eyes at the top of the page was an auction for Black Copper Marans chicks, and the price was unbelieveable. I couldn't resist... my husband was off tuesday and I showed him... I waffled back and forth for a couple of minutes, and then just entered a bid... there were only 10 minutes or so left, and I only bid about 15.00 over what the current bid was, because we JUST had the electric issues permanently fixed monday, and I knew that bill was coming, and it was going to be a big one.
We ate breakfast, I came back to the computer, and I'd won the auction. I emailed the seller to get the details, and after a couple of exchanges, he told me he'd looked at the birds, and they were a lot bigger than he thought... he was afraid they'd die in shipment if he sent what the actual auction called for.... he knew I wanted them for egg production... so he asked if I'd mind taking a breeding trio shipped in one box, and Chicks in another box... but less chicks so they wouldn't suffocate. For the price I had paid, I would have been happy with less chicks all alive... but the offer of the Trio was amazing.
They left Florida Wednesday, Express, but didn't arrive here until this morning....
The adults are about 7 months old... and absolutely GORGEOUS.... Three of the chicks are exactly the same size as my original 7, 2 of the chicks are about a week old, and the rest are about 2 weeks old..... but, I now have 24 new Black Copper Marans, my original 7, and 36 eggs in the incubator.
Today is my mom's birthday, and usually a rough day for me... she's been gone 3 years.... but, this has made it a pretty good day so far. :)
Here the chicks are on arrival, and after getting them out of the box.

My New Adventure
How exciting, Melissa!! The chickens are really beautiful - well, all except the poor bald guy... I'm sure he/she is glad to be in with the babies while she/he recovers!
How too cool for you... One question, did you call your Rooster Haystack???? ;~}
Yay! Now husky proof that pen. Love those dark ones with the color hues in the feathers, we have some like that and they are just so beautiful. In certain light you can see purples and blues and greens.
Good luck with your new flock.
LOL Nope, just calling him Roo. I opened up the box and he tried to jump out, but calmed down as soon as I had a good hold on him.
I haven't figured out which one I'm going to name after Haystack yet. ;)
smedgekles, we're as husky proof as we can get right now.
Mel!!! I'm so happy for you, the birds are beautiful, If you let their feather grow can one of the Roos fly this far?? I'm envious:-( I want one. Not Kidding Mel. Have a great day and I'm so glad you started a new thread, will be following with great interest. Haystack
If I ever get any more roo's, that is what I will be naming him.. Mr Haystack.....
When I come to visit. You may be a doz short of those Maran eggs! LOL
Geo
aw, you know I'd give you a dozen George!
Howdy Taynor!!! Been missing you, where ya been? It's only 18 day's til Mel's new hatch. It's gonna be exciting. Mel is very calm right now but I can hear her heart starting to pump a little faster, Thump, thump, thumpity-thump. Do ya hear it Taynor's? LOL Haystack
I had to laugh, this morning my wife told me, this forum is like a soap opera, and should be called "All My Children" I told her that would be alright with me. Cause that's how I feel about all of you anyway. LOL Haystack
Your wife sounds like my hubby Haystack.
Sue, Hopefully I'll have plenty of eggs to go around! ;)
We moved the big ones to the barn last night so they wouldn't be out in the weather, and this morning when I went out, our Barred Rock hen was sitting on top of the crates on the chicken wire we put on top of the crates just in case, because this part of the barn isn't sealed like the chicken area is.
I carried them out to the barn, and hubby carried the crates... when we went in the barn with Roo, he told the other roosters, "you better not pick on him, or mom will be making Chicken and Noodles, and I guarantee you this guy won't be the one in the pot." I thought it was funny.
When I opened the crate the girls are in to refill their water, this one jumped out and walked around for a little bit. I finally got her back in. Hubby hasn't gotten my pens like Haystack's done yet... we weren't expecting to need them so soon. LOL
congrats on ur new babies they r very nice looking, the color and feathers look great too on the older birds. love the roo he is very handsome. i'd be over joyed with excitement. what a steal on them too!!!
congrats again!!
silkie
chickens poop where ever they are... LOL
What beautiful birds. I didn't realize they had such a sheen to their feathers. It looks green in the pics. Is it different in different light?
I haven't had them long enough to see them in different light. LOL But, the green in the feathers isn't breed standard according to the french, so I shouldn't be hatching any of her eggs I guess. :) I think they're beautiful BS or not.
Hey Taynors! My chickens never poo in the nesting boxes. I have them all potty trained. I have two commodes in the coop and have trained them to use those. It's so much neater that way. Also I have waterfront property in Arizona for sale. Of course they poo in the nest boxes, Honestly though there are ways to prevent most of it. I have people comming over to buy some chickens so I'll get back to you. Haystack
Taynors!! What do you mean good night??? You posted at 7:16. Comon Taynor's were on a Mel watch. You can't just run off and dump us at this hour. Taynor's wake up, T A Y N O R ' S WAKE UP!!! Night, Night, sleep tight, Taynors is off to LA LA Land. SHeeesh this is boring.
LOL o my.. I absolutely love reading the threads when you guys get started. You are so funny.
Those are beautiful birds. If I didn't have a full coop I'd add those to the list of others I want. :) Now realizing I need to build onto the coop & make it twice as big. Its not big enough to accommodate all the different kinds of chickens I want.
I'm really surprised Sue hasn't gotten chickens before now! She always goes to bed about the same time they do. ;) here lately, the rooster has been crowing when I'm going to sleep. :(
Don't be afraid to join in Grey, Haystack just loves to give me a hard time.... LOL
I think I'd like the chicks even if they weren't beautiful... their eggs are!
Haystack, you'll hear me squwacking when one of those girls gets over their trip shock and leaves me an egg! ;)
Tomorrow we're going to pressure wash and bleach the coop, put down new bedding, and then I'll take the girls and roo in tomorrow night when everyone gets on the roost... I think that will be the easiest on all of them. And, come monday, if one of those roosters starts attacking roo... he may be seeing noodles in his future... I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
Morning Mel!!! Chicken noodle soup,Mmmmm. I do love it and sometimes I'm just looking for a reason to make some. Not LOL

T&P for the two girls to get along with the roo
well if Haystack don't get his tushy over here i may have to get to bed soon LOL come on Haystack where is you at ! ?
Taynor's It is impossible to respond when you laughing so hard your creating a gully washer. I could not figure out if you were a contortionist or just really needed more sleep. What a great pic. I actually printed it for my scrap book. This is why I love the forum. Such good sports and wonderful friends. OK back to Mel watch.
Sixteen day's and counting down: Very uneventful, up til now that is. Shhhhhhsh. Can you hear it? Canuhearit? Thump, thump, thumpity thump. Icanhearit!!! Be still my heart.
I've been good, the only thing I've done is check the temperature a few times a day I almost completely forgot yesterday to do it at all. I'm maintaining 99. (something) the something usually varies... and 30-35% humidity.
I don't remember if I answered a question about what I have in the bator... I have 36 BCM eggs, and I think 5 Wellsummer eggs. I'm not expecting anything out of the wellsummers, I think they were too old when they went in.
I had to work today, and just went out to check them after I got home... Roo and his two girls were sitting together inside the barn... I don't think they've ventured out yet. They were out of the coop... but not very far from it. LOL No eggs from the girls yet. Has anyone ever had a chicken shipped and know how long it takes them to start laying again?
