Native Texas Vines

Sheila, thanks. I've never tasted the Bromelia. It would probably give me a tracheotomy if I tried. It tastes me every time I get close.
Mamajack - It not only grows in the ground, it will take the place if I let it. Need to do some gonzo machete control on it now. A nuclear bomb might work. Then I wouldn't need to get too close.

agaveguy you don't love it? lol. i wish i could grow that. have you got any other angles on other photos? how tall is that thing? and it's red.

Mamajack - Like a sadist loves his masochist. It is beautiful. Probably about four feet high and six feet across. It changes colors almost every day. Here's a picture from a week earlier when the flower spike wasn't even showing. More yellow and orange.

A few days later and the flower is beginning to show. Getting more red.

but look at that flower. it looks like those tiny little pink flowers you see at michael's around easter that they bundle altogether to make something really pretty that girls like.

O.T.......Post a picture of a Native Texas Vine .....someone!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

lol. how long do people expect to stay on topic when they open a thread? and i just figured out what O.T. was.

do people grow crossvine where it gets lots of moisture? and how fast do yours grow? there. how's that?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The info says moist soil and not to let it dry out.....
But my back fence is dry most of the time and it has survived my care. I have a soaker hose that gets some of that area, but not all of it.

The first year it was slow growing but after that it took off. The one plant covers at least 25 foot of my fence now that it shares with a passiflora.

how big was your first plant sheila? i brought rooted cuttings in and they are not much bigger. they are way far out and never get extra water here.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

About two foot to start I think.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

no i meant the root structure?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well as they say the first year they sleep, second they creep, and the third they leap.
I don't remember the root being realy large.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

oh i forgot that. nah. i've had one out in the garden that texas can't kill for many years and it is nothing like what yall show. maybe i'll loosen the soil this fall and see if that will help.
