Several blooms today on Clematis texensis.
Native Texas Vines
The Clematis crispa is very elegant. I have long wanted to plant a Crossvine, but can't decide where I would put it. The local HEB has it in a concrete planter in blazing sun on a short trellis and it blooms itself silly. Here's Maurandya antirrhiniflora, Snapdragon Vine. Just starting to bloom. A bit of rain and it would have a hundred flowers or more.
I didn't know there was a Clemetis with blooms in that shape. Hmmmm, I may have to rethink my aversion to vines. :-)
Carla
Carla, if you don't like vines because they take over, then Clematis crispa is for you, the vine is very delicate and not at all aggressive.
Josephine.
Thank you, Josephine. Yes, that is why I don't care for vines (they are usually aggressive). I have one PF vine tucked way back in my flowerbed and I am out every other day training the vine to wrap around itself and the trellis, and not to grab onto everything in the vicinity. If it weren't for the beautiful Gulf Fritillaries, I would not have this vine. I'm just too "persnickity" about vines, I guess. I'll look for a spot for this beautiful Clemetis, though, if it's a more well behaved vine.
Carla
Another dainty native vine/flower is the Passiflora lutea.......a greenish-yellow blossom and interesting foliage,,,,which happens to be butterfly food
(well, at least during the early stage of development) Fritillaries as well Grows to maybe 12-14 ft under optimum conditions
Sorry the pic is a little blurry
Lee, I think one of mine is over 5 feet long and one is under 3 feet. The ones in the sunny areas aren't doing that well because of the high heat and constant day-long sunshine we were having. Drought and wind still going on and that doesn't help. The longer one is in a shadier area, the other very sunny. We're getting a break from the really bad heat at the moment and I'm sure they are grateful. Both of those are well-established, which is why I mentioned them.
Then that sorta reinforces my suspicion that too much direct sunlight (now & in the past) has been the problem Thanks a bunch for your input and wisdom!
There's something about this one....Pearl Milkweed Vine, Matelea reticulata. I'd like a piece of jewelry patterned after those unique star-shaped flowers with the tiny pearl-like center! I have a new milkweed vine this year, Climbing Milkweed, Funastrum cynanchoides. I'm hoping it will survive, maybe flower. But if this heat continues, I may have to shade it a bit somehow.
That pearl milkweed vine is really amazing Linda, you have then neatest plants.
Josephine.
They are my treasures, Josephine. Some people have a lot of money, but at I have my special plants...they're very valuable as far as I'm concerned.
I feel that way too Linda, native plants are very special and should be appreciated more.
They ARE valuable....and I'm so grateful that you've GIVEN me so many beautiful examples of these gems....of which,...we are caretakers....so to speak. Beauty, wealth is determined by the "beholder"....regardless what the "masses" may claim
I consider mine as "treasures" too....even the most simple plant
Wow you all have some great natives. I am already on the hunt for seeds from the clematis Agaveguy posted and I am awaiting an aswer to see if they are available but I have to ask you if you can tell me where to find seeds or plants of the Pearl Milkweed Vine. I googled and did not find anything but I am not the smartest when it comes to computer searches.
Marie, if you'll remind me in early fall, I might have seeds collected for the Pearl Milkweed Vine by then. I'd be happy to send you some.
Ok thanks Linda.
linda i might want some of those as well. can the vine be dug? or does it have a long root? hello everyone. long time.
I am not sure if it would survive. I do seem to recall that it's been done successfully before. It's fairly easy to grow from seed.
the reason i asked is i tried to dig a regular milkweed once. an old established plant. the root went on forever and my transplant was not successful.
Happy Birthday Eric--hope you have a great day!
Debbie
Yes, Happy Birthday Eric, please put your name on the birthday list.
Josephine.
its on FB
Sorry Debbie, but what is FB?
Nice vine irwells!!
She might be talking about Facebook, Josephine...but I just say that because it's apparently so popular now! Personally, I'm not on Facebook.
Oh I see, thank you Linda, I am not on Facebook either.
Thanks, Josephine! Got to work in my garden all day. Lots of sweat equity. Lots of sweat anyway. Put up a trellis for my Madiera Vine. We had it when I was a kid and I always wanted to have it again. Very fragrant. Also put a steel girdle on the Mexican weeping bamboo. It was more flopping than weeping. Drove in three t-posts and hooped it with about 8 feet of cow panel. That put some spine in the thing. Planted a whole bunch of rainlily bulbs and cacti that friends had sent me this week. And family baked me a German chocolate cake. A good day.
Eric
Bromelia pinguin blooming today.
Wow! that is really pretty and unusual. I am glad you had a good day, we just tried to survive the heat.
Josephine.
Guess that bromelia could resemble a birthday cake; but I am sure the German Chocolate was much tastier!!
Happy Cake-Day Eric!! Never too late since we missed you on the DG list this morning.
Sheila_FW
agaveguy i love that thing. does it grow in the ground where you are?
