Congratulations Roberta. What a nice article. I didn't realize that you were studying to be a landscape designer. Of course you already are!

Rob - what a great article and your garden are simply beautiful (that Puya plant is VERY cool and the most blue I have seen in a flower). THere is not too much difference between your photos from your backyard and the shots you took at the botanical gardens in Brazil. What part of San Diego do you live in? We used to live about 2 miles from Cuyamaca College off the 94 in Jamul and before that in Bonita. Your son must belong to my clan - my maiden name is Thorsen. I have read Billy's article before and seen his funny videos, so it is reasonable for Thor to want have a job like his.

Well, that's pretty cool, Roberta! You will be the 'right' kind of designer, by that I mean that the love of the plants will come first and that's where the accent lies, not on just creating a nice landscape using the same old standard ho-hum plants. You have a good eye for it.......

Rob,
You been hiding your light under a bushel basket, girl? WAY TO GO GIRL FRIEND! I am very proud of you!
Not to mention that I'm down right envious of your back yard fireplace. Does it double as a bbq? Been planning on building something like that for my backyard for DH to cook on.
I am delighted that you were chosen for the subject in the article, and even dumbstruck, (Jaw hanging open), when I see your beautiful garden areas. Well done! Brava!

Thanks guys! I knew you would like to see your DG friend's pics!
We bought our house less than 2 years ago and this is the first time I have my own garden. This is how I found DG and let me tell you: I have learned A TON here, especially from Doss and Ecrane! So it's in part thanks to you that my garden looks so nice now!

SW, I'm sure the fireplace can be used as a BBQ too, but so far we've only used it as a fireplace. It's a great way to get rid of those giant palm tree fronds that fall off!

This is how it looked like when we bought our house!

It's great that you have 'before' photos Roberta. You've made magic happen!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Wow, you really made that a focal point in your yard, Rob, rather than an eye sore.
I think I can figure it out, on my own wouldn't mind incorporating a fireplace, would block the view of the chicken pen, which would be nice. I'll keep you posted.
I always forget the before photos so it's usually halfway through before I even think of it. Looks great now!
Enjoy it! Perfect gathering place of an evening! : )

Very impressive, Roberta! It's a beautiful garden. I always did like the color of your house, too, and the terracotta colors go very well.

And G.O.T. is adorable. :-)

Thank you! : )

Wow Rob! Love the article - and really amazing how much you have done in a relatively short time. Very inspiring, and your son is cool!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh Roberta, how facinating this all is. :-)

Congratulations on the article and all the wonderful work you have done in your garden. Since we have seen many of your before pics, this makes it even more special. Before you know it, we will be asking you questions and begging for your help. lol

Hi Thor, nice to see you finally. You've got a great mom there and I hope you learn a lot from her love of gardening.

Way to go Rob,
Donna

ps, I had 3 of the Spanish flags make it this year. Gave 2 to family members and kept one for me. It is doing well and has a few little blooms on it already.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks Redtootsiepop!

Donna, glad to hear about your spanish flags! What a coincidence, last night I was looking at mine (showing first bloom too) and I though of you!
