This was a really odd looking creature. Took a picture to the county and they tentatively identified it - have you seen this before?
CLOSED: Hummingbird moth?
This is indeed a hummingbird moth (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae): most likely Hemaris thysbe - see http://tinyurl.com/65fz46 for an image and more information.
Thank you so much for confirming - it was quite a surprise to find on my butterfly bushes! I hope to see them again soon - they hovered and sipped for quite some time.

my husband woke me up at 11 the other night to tell me the humming bird was out come check it out, i laughed at him and told him it was this moth and he didnt believe me now that he sees a picture he believes it he is crazy
