Are you checking to make sure it needs water before you water? I don't think Daphnes like wet feet at all so I'd do the "finger test" and see if the soil is feeling dry before you water again.

All of my daphneys died, and I believe it was caused by a fungus that was a result of cutting down a water oak 5 years prior, and the rotting roots caused the daphneys to dry up, and die.Once started, it went fast. Sorry. Mike

Looks like the famous daphne death to me.
I hope I'm wrong, but I've experienced it a number of times.
I agree w/ Mike - once it starts, the whole plant usually dies within a matter of days.
The one daphne species which has survived for about 10 years for me is daphne genkwa.
Unfortunately, it has no scent, but flowers beautifully.
I don't know if it's really less susceptible to the daphne death or if this one has just been lucky.

oh u guys, i think i'm gonna cry... this is my 2nd daphne tragedy. i dug it up and put it in a large pot w/new soil. i cut it back because the stems still had green in them 2 days ago. pray for us....
i might just give up on these guys , even though they are my favorite shrub. it's just too heart breaking... although......weerobin, i may try your genkwa suggestion....( gardeners are either die hard stubborn , in denial or have God complexes...) i'm OCD, so it may be all of the above.....plus more.
thanks

Oh what a shame! It really does look poorly. Could you try again with a pot grown specimen - they are such gorgeous plants.

Fortunately daphnes are easy to root. Mike

Mine grow very easily from seed too.

Daphnes are easy to root? I have had good luck with mine so far - into it's 5th year. But maybe I should try to root a few cuttings as insurance.
I accidentally broke a branch off last year - I should have tried rooting it. Here's a photo of it blooming this past February.
