What Wrong?

These lilies are growing in a pot. They started out looking OK, but now the tips are turning brown. Any ideas?

Could it be a fungal infection? Too much water?

Could be too much water. It was very dry, then starting raining a lot recently. I don't seem to be doing well with lilies in pots. I killed Tiger Woods already. Guess my drainage holes in that pot were too small. This pot has an attached saucer. Maybe I should remove it??

How deep in the pot did you plant it? I usually plant the bulb at about half the height of the pot. You could try removing the base to check for drainage. Did you try tipping the pot to see if a lot of water came out at the bottom? Could also be you did nothing wrong and you just got a finicky lily :-(

Some of mine in the ground look like that...I figured due to all the rain we have had!

No water tipped out of the saucer. The pot is 15" in diameter and 12" tall. I planted the bulbs at least half way down. It's no big loss if they don't make it. They were some very simple yellow and red ones I received as a free bonus a few years ago. I tried an experiment with them and dug them up last fall and pot them in the pot and left them outside all winter. Did not really think they's make it through our NE winter, but they all did. I don't thinkk the current problem has anything to do with overwintering in the pot. Will just watch them and see what happens.

Found an interesting article on Leaf Scorch and think that could be my proble. We have had cold/damp weather that changes back and forth to hot. http://plantlilies.com/growlilies/73-scorch.html At least it sounds like the blooms will be OK.

Being a oriental lily, Tiger Woods is inherently more finicky than most other hybrid lilies, and requires better drainage. So I am not surprise it went first, nor should you be.

After checking out that site I seem to have some Boytris too...ugh!

This pot of lilies are blooming now and the flowers look fine. I'm thinking the leaf problem may have been weather related. Here is one of the blooms that was a poly today. The leaves have not changed much. Just the tips look burned.

And just look at that funky stigma!

Pretty one!!

It's not just the stigma that's funky. There are eight stamens and eight petals!

When I have a poly it's usually a 4-way stigma, hers is 6-way. Extra funk! :)

I was touring a garden yesterday that had a faciated Orienpet. It looked like between four and six stalks fused together. The thing was a monster. The people that owned it were appalled and thought it was the ugliest thing untill I started ooohing and ahhing over it. It's going to be fantastic when it blooms. I think that piqued their interest. :)

I am very disappointed that my Lilium lijiangense is fasciating again, and worse this time. Sigh. With its extremely long pedicels, it's going to be another bad hair year for it.

At least this year it is tilted, rather than a vertical spike. The "hair" will be combed, rather than going every which way.

I think the fasciated ones are cool too. Be sure to sure photos of your Lilium lijiangense when it blooms Leftwood.
