Saving Eggplant Seed

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

I intend to save seed from my Rosa Bianca eggplants (open pollinated). Are there any special procedures required as there are for tomatoes (fermentation), or do I just separate the seeds from the ripened fruit and clean, dry, and store it? Paul

Hi Paul,

All you need to do is separate the seed from the fruit and dry/store them. You do however need to let the fruit go well beyond the edible point before the seeds will be viable. Ive read somewhere that there will be a color change that will indicate when the seeds are mature and i believe that a purple eggplant will turn a dark almost brown color and the skin will be dull. In either case i let them go until they become very soft, makes it easier to extract the seeds.

Here is a picture of my egg plant. Can some one tell me how I know when the fruit is ripe and when I can get the seeds and what to do with them prior to planting them. I got these seeds from a friend who got them from a friend, so we do not know the procedure. Thank you in advance.
