Heat!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

we got a nice rain fall yesterday

Copperas Cove, TX(Zone 8b)

We got rain 3 times this week. Its a miracle. Whooohooo!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh you all just gave me hope that I'm coming home at the right time - Aug 18.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

It has rained here off and on since Wednesday. Over 6 inch total. yesterday evening was 2 1/2 inches in about 2 hours. The ground is "squishy".

Temps are up and the humidity will make your clothes wet in about 5 minutes.

Sure beats the drought we have had since Spring.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I second that LouC it's been that same here and it rained a long time yesterday DH says we gotten almost 5 inches in the last 2 wks.

Bryan, TX

Same story, 2nd verse.
Could get better but its gonna get worse.

All weekend long the weather man said its gonna rain.
No rain occured and it was 99 yesterday and headed that way today.

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

We missed out on rain the last few weeks and are at about .40 for the last two months.
At least it is August now and closer to winter.

Denton, TX(Zone 8a)

Hotter than all get-out over the last couple of days (102F yesterday), then all of a sudden around five yesterday once everything was done wilting outside, we got a nice blow up of wind, and by six thirty or so we got a nice shower. The Denton airport only reported .02" precip, but I think we got more than that at the house. Everything perked up and I didn't have to go around with the hose after all. Today, hot and sticky. 99F for the high with 20% chance of rain. We'll see!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok. It's doing it again. The background of the threads is a pleasant tan. Is this happening on any one else's pc?

Christi

Denton, TX(Zone 8a)

LouC, not mine.

Anyway, I just realized I need to stop complaining. Found out there were 42 consecutive days over 100F here in D/FW in 1980, and 56 total days over 100F in 1998. Gulp!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Not mine either..
HOT here too....Say, didn't we already have August!!!!!???

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

We already have 45 days over 100 and are on pace for 60+ days.
I'M COOKED!

Bryan, TX

Hi all you tough TX gardeners. Hot here in B/CS, too. Lying Bob (weatherman) said we had a chance (even though small) for rain. Nothing. I guess I better plan on another large water bill because I've been watering something everyday.

When I get home from work my pups (they aren't pups - grown Labs) come in the house with me and sleep for two hours. By the way, so do I because you can't go outside until around 7:15 or you will die of heat stroke.

Anybody up for a cool lemonade out on the veranda?

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, if it rains two inches in San Antonio this Saturday then a car dealership there has to pay off all the cars they sold from June - August or something to that effect. Forecast shows 20 percent. Let us hope he jinx himself for our benefit.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

It sounds like the dealership won't have to pay off. The latest forecasts I've seen for S. A. for Saturday say hot and dry, no chance given for rain. Also, the dealership knew what they were doing. There would have to be 2 INCHES of rain from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., from what I hear! Ah...2 inches of rain...when will we ever see that again...I still wonder!

Copperas Cove, TX(Zone 8b)

Speaking of heat. I know it will never end but I just got a huge box of caladium bulbs that someone dropped off at my office because they said they heard I like plants, lol. I don't know if they were dug in the fall or this spring. Should I plant them now or store them til spring?

Bryan, TX

I don't know but lucky you.

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

It just hit 132 degrees here. My flip flops are stuck to the sidewalk and I smell like a brisket. Help me someone!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I know it is hot here in Texas, but I am sure you have a typo! LOL! Only 102 or 103 there today I am sure.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

It got to 119 here in B/CS one summer day a few years back. According to heat index it was supposed to be 110 yesterday. I didn't hear if we did or not.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Heat index is usually much higher than real temperature.

Copperas Cove, TX(Zone 8b)

Flip flops smelling like brisket you will have all the dogs in the neighborhood chasing you, lol.

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

Today is even hotter. Temps around 144 degrees. The local weather station caught fire. The heat index is around 165. All the fire hydrants got so hot they exploded but nothing but steam came out.

Copperas Cove, TX(Zone 8b)

Roflmao, I just cleaned out a bed and planted some iris and a whole box full of caladiums and I almost believe you. Its too hot to be outside long, lol.

Kendalia, TX

Ju, I live a little south of you, and it got a little warm here, too. I couldn't measure the temperature, because my termometer melted. The only thing moving outside is molten lava.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Hey...at least you've got a sense of humor about it! Lord, it DOES seem hot, doesn't it? Seems like we never get a break!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh Lordy I sure hope ya all keep that heat there and don't send it to east texas
School starts Monday and the bus I am driving till the new driver is ready has no air on it and I will melt right there on the bus LOL

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

Annette's rules for bus driving in the heat:

100% cotton short/sleeveless shirt, hair up off the neck, Plenty of water to drink, and a spray bottle filled with water to spray yourself!!! And, if your district allows, shoes with open toes (sandals) and shorts or skort that are long enough to keep you from sticking to the vinyl seats. I used to hate riding with new drivers! Most still couldn't activate the lights and put the brakes on at the proper time. Held my breath a lot! White knuckles, too!

GOOD LUCK!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

oh yeah hair up sleeveless shirt and shorts already have a towel to put on the seat but have to also have a sweater to wear for when I get done and go into the office to do my work in there to so I don't freeze LOL

everyone that we trained should do good as we already took them out om their routes while getting in their driving time.

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

I remember when I used to have a "pleather" couch. (plastic faux leather)

I used to sit down on it in the summer with no shirt. By the time you got up, there was a puddle in the cushion. It sucked the sweat right out of you.

I imagine that bus being one giant pleather couch.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

Phyllis, you could hang meat in our office. I had a jacket with me, some of the others had blankets! I sure don't miss that part of the job! Miss the people.

Jujube, the seats are far worse than "pleather". For one thing, you are usually not alone in the seat, there's usually a couple of little kids, and on the first day, all of their supplies. So, you are "stuck" against the wall of the bus (not cushioned), the new driver doesn't know how to get kids to their seats because they have never faced 70 kids who all want to sit in the back seat, and all their parents who want their child in the front seat. No amount of training really prepares you for that! Then there is the parent who wants their kindergartener to sit with their 5th grader. Oh, the stories I could tell!

Copperas Cove, TX(Zone 8b)

Yuck, we went fishing tonight thinking it would be cooler at night. Well let me tell you it wasn't by much. I bet with the heat index it was 95 at midnight still. No more fishing for me til the weather cools down a little. I feel for you all on the school bus, lol. The thought of riding in any vehicle with no a/c makes me want to faint.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh but the newer buses now have cloth seats which is nice and air but the route I am filling in on is not one with an air bus so yeah the seats are worse then pleather.
Even with a sleeveless top and shorts I'll still walk off the bus int he afternoon with my back soaked and I have a towel on the seat now to help on the bottom so I don't stick to it.

LOL Annette you are right...they say My lil one has to sit with my bigger child and of course the older one doesn't want the lil one near by as they are too cool for that....or there is the younger ones that are now in 1st grade and they want to mother hen the new ones ..which really the first week or so is nice cause it helps the new lil ones make a friend and not be scared or cry.

Don't forget pictures ..everyone has to take pictures of the lil ones starting school on the bus and of course taking them home and no one is there to get them as they didn't pay attention to the time since they were free for the first time in years to go shopping alone so the child is on the bus the whole route and you take them back to school crying.

The best part of the whole thing is getting to the schools and the cars everywhere as parents drove them to school the first day and they park in the bus zones making it impossible to get through or a tight squeeze and the schools do nothing to keep them out of there.
And everyone just drives right through the stop sign when we have it out ...they don't care if there are kids getting on or off the bus let alone anyone crossing the lot to get to or from and on the roads it is even worse with cars running the signs...but mark my word one day someone will do that and it will cost someone a life and then for a few years it will be a big thing to enforce then die off again to no one doing anything....
Can someone tell me WHY in the state of Texas they don't enforce the stopping when a school bus has the stop arm out loading and unloading kids?

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

I don't know, but on the highway that goes from the outskirts of the city to my area in the county, two lanes each direction, part of the way divided highway with median, part with turning lane in the middle, if the school bus stops, the traffic stops on that side of the highway whenever I have seen it. I wondered about the opposite side of the highway...are they supposed to stop also with the divided highway? Personally, I don't like the idea of a young child crossing that highway to the other side anyway. There are no traffic signals on that highway for long stretches out there.

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

Linda, if there is a median, at a raised concrete area, the traffic does not have to stop. If it is flat, no curbs, etc, the law states they must stop. We have that kind of problem on SH105. The law is nearly impossible to enforce. DPS tried to enforce it for years, to no avail. As far as crossing, where I drove, and this is more less a district policy, if there is a speed limit over 35, no student is allowed to cross. Most all routes are written to pick up and deliver the student on the "door" side. Kindergarteners are not allowed off the bus without a parent there to get them.

Phyllis, Don't forget about the P.M.! All those little ones that don't know where their stop is! And the ones that haven't a clue what their house looks like!!!! It is so important for those little ones to know their address and phone number. Most of the teachers have their address pinned to their shirts, but many get lost before the critical time. They are still children at play.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Annette! Usually nobody stops on the opposite side of the highway, median or no median. Guess it would be hard for them to even notice in time to stop with a highway that wide and going fairly fast.
I was thinking of a name for this summer, at least for the much hotter, much drier parts of the state. Hellacious Inferno of 2009 came to mind. It should definitely have a name. Then people years later could say "remember the ________?

San Marcos, TX(Zone 8b)

The drought in the 50's is called "the time it never rained" from the book.

Kendalia, TX

Linda, I can think of some names for it. . . .

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah. I can definitely think of some names that can't be posted on DG! My truck overheated on the way home today. We had left the city, out in the country, in triple digit heat. DH was feeling ill even before that happened. We had to stop by the side of the road. Lucky for us, a neighbor came along and stopped...nice guy...he recognized the truck. Eventually, we were able to drive home again after trying several things. I had brought a couple of those ice pack things in a small ice chest with me, had to put one one on DH's head to cool him off. Whew!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

ROFLOL!!!!

Edited....later after I wiped my tears and quit holding my sides.
That is our Texas in August alright. It is like childbirth though. Come January when the north is in 7 foot snow drifts, blizzards, 30 below, and lakes are frozen over we will consider ourselves the lucky ones! We will forget how bad it was.
