Colin, that yellow is awsome, never heard of that one either.. hope you get some pods of that one.. I know how you feel about being late to work, I have felt the same way, and I have found I was rather glad to take a few minutes to see what I have been waiting so long for, agree?

Thanks Debra... and yes i'm glad i waited :-)

a close up showing extra floral nectaries...

this is the one that has already flowered for me here:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6534232
although it produced lots of pollen and i hand pollinated each flower, none of them set, there are more flower buds on the way... i'm wondering if the African Caudex types are self compatible!?
this plant also produces extra floral nectar at the base of the flowerbuds

Ipomoea species Tanzania plant... this is the same plant shown here forming flowerbuds http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6534432
the plant seems to be concentrating on growing leaves as the flowerbuds have stayed about the same size....

Love that yellow color on your mg bloom. You have some real neat species of mg!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

The clarity and topic of your photos today are outstanding! That is so interesting about the floral nectaries. What a remarkable way that the plants develop to coax pollination from insects! I bet that is why I have so many ants on my I. carnea (MG Bush). I am enjoying your great photo documentation of these wonderful plants! :-)

these flowers are going to get me sacked!!!! i've had to wait back for this flower to open up a enough for a pic and now i'm late again!

Ipomoea Sp. East Africa (Tanzania Mbeya Province)

this is the same plant here:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6726415
i got my hands covered in the extra floral nectar whilst i pollinated the flower... it tastes lovely lovely lovely... much better than I.sp 'white flower with purple centre' which is also from Tanzania...

Thumbnail by ceej1963

close-up of the flower... it's more pink and less lavender than the pic shows... similar in colour to the lavender-pink Moonvine from Emma...

this is how it was an hour ago...

and a profile.... showing sepals and lots of yummy extra floral nectar :-)

It's a beauty, Colin!! How old do you think the plant is to have such a marvelously large caudex?

Joseph

Thanks Debra and Joseph...

i didn't get the sack(not that i really would have anyway)... just laughed at!! it seems that "sorry i'm late, i was waiting for a flower to open" is excruciatingly funny....

i don't know how old the plant is, or how long it would take to produce that size caudex... i know they can be grown from cuttings and that they produce bigger and better caudexes(or is that caudices?) if they are not over potted...

at the moment i'm thinking that they might not be self compatible fertility wise... this would be a problem in getting seeds... as i think that even if i had two plants of each they probably wouldn't be in flower at the same time..... there is very little information on the web that i can find...so it's a case of "suck it and see"!!
