Bulwinkle and the boys in Nova Scotia

Granville Beach, NS(Zone 6a)

My garden is very much a work in progress so I need all the help I can get. Bulwinkle insisted on driving the lawn tractor while the boys played at being hood ornaments.

The boys showing off their new Nova Scotia tartan kilts. They are on the dike built by the early french settlers to reclaim the marshlands from the Fundy tides. The tide runs 27 feet on average at this location and it is only a short walk down the lane from our house. You can hike for miles along the dikes.

The kilt maker Mrs Eastjack, or Val for short.

Val and I retired to this lovely quiet spot a year ago. We are working hard to make a garden but will have to grow almost everything from seed as the price of established plants is over our budget. I built a seed starter with under heat and lights and this combined with the greenhouse enabled us to start a large number of perennials this year. The soil is very fertile but has a high clay content. I have had to install drainage channels and add lots of manure to the soil. Fortunately being a farming area manure was not hard to get.

Friday is forecast to be a wet day but they say Saturday will be sunny. We will take Bulwinkle and the boys to the Annapolis Royal historic gardens and other attractions in the area.

Great pictures and I love the kilts. Those lads are getting really well dressed now. I look forward to the Annapolis Royal pictures. Hang on to Bullwinkle. With all that water nearby, he's likely to try to take a dip.

OMG the kilts! Luv 'em. What a lovely part of the country you live in. Would love to walk along that dike. Looking forward to more pics.

Sandy

What a lovely area you live in eastjack! Those kilts are so cute, Val is very talented. And the boys are obviously having a really great time with you. Oh, the stories they'll be telling when they finally make it home...

Those kilts are terrific! The boys are adorable in them! Be careful they don't take up playing the bagpipes! I can just hear the practicing - "killing cats" lol
I hear it takes 2 years to get proficient!
(btw - my hubby has taken up bagpipes, but hasn't gotten past the chanter, so it's not bad, YET!) lol

Hmmmmm for Calgary, maybe some western hats?
There must be some teeny ones available - will have to check it out lol

Those kilts are wonderful. They're the best dressed gnomes around. I have fond memories of summering in NS one year when I lived in NB.

The boys in their jaunty kilts (great job, Mrs. Eastjack!) appear to be enjoying lovely Nova Scotia as much as I am just looking at the photos. ^_^

Hello again from Nova Scotia. Mrs Eastjack appreciates all the praise for the boys kilts, thanks to all.

We almost did not settle here as four years ago we mortgaged our house elsewhere in Nova Scotia and bought a house in Grand Forks, BC. DonM47 may know the location. It was on Jasper Avenue near the airport.
Anyway when time came to retire we decided we wanted to stay in Nova Scotia after all. As we were retiring I was not limited by having to find employment so we looked for best climate, scenery, price, and quiet and ended up here in Granville Beach. Within a few km we have wilderness trails on the rocky Fundy shore and dikes to hike along the Annapolis River. There is a world class botanical garden, several national historic sites, a wildlife park, golf, theater, shopping, and even an amusement park, A little further away is a huge national park for canoeing etc.

Today the sun came out, it was 23 deg, and the boys got to see the Historic Gardens.

Rhododendrons are the main attraction at this time of year. Bulwinkle climbed up for a close view.

The red rhododendrons contrast wonderfully with the laburnum.

The french settled here in the early 1600's and built dikes to reclaim the fertile salt marshes. This extensive dike system still remains and was of great interest to the boys.

All that walking makes for tired feet. Especially when your as small as the boys. Here they take a well earned rest. Unfortunately it is a little to early for the 250 varieties of roses in the gardens.

Historic Fort Anne is located in the center of town and provides a place to laze around or walk the dog.
