White Tulips for garden wedding March'10! Help, please!

Fort Worth , TX(Zone 8b)

Hi, everyone. I need to order a lot of white tulips that would (have a very good chance of) being in bloom in mid March. Does anyone have a recommendation they could share? I'd really appreciate it!

The favorite tulip I'd like to have is "Spring Green" -- with green and a little yellow on it. Have any of you planted these in Zone 8b? If so, do you remember when they bloomed?

Thank you so so much!

I think you'd likely be better off to talk to a wholesale flower supplier that could have the cut blooms shipped for you at the desired time. If you're actually planning a garden wedding and need them in the landscape rather than as cut flowers, then your plan is probably the best way to go. Tulips here are a one shot flower, they won't naturalize or come back next year, but your probably don't care about that if it's just important for the wedding plans. They also have a required chill time so need to be refridgerated for a specific time before planting. Make sure you allow for that timeing.

If it's white in the landscape you're looking for, you might want to try something that is more reliable and long blooming than the tulips. (Not trying to change your mind, just offering alternatives.) This year I had white allysum and white petunias and they were in full bloom for a long time. Their peak was the entire month of March and into April. They started fading in the heat of May. Here's a pic of that combo. You could also add tulips of white daffodils to this combo.

I hope this is some help.

Try Colorblends.

I suggest you contact
Brent and beckys Bulbs

They sell retain bubs which they grow on their own property in Maryland
or mebbe Virginia

They also advertise cut flowers on their website and mention weddings.

Good luck!

I do love the allysum and petunias. The photo is beautiful.

Yes, tulips are extravagant since they don't perennialize... This may be the only year I ever plant a significant number of them. I've ordered some Diana and Purissima tulips ( Brent and Becky's rec) , but also white early-blooming daffodils, white scilla, snowdrops, etc. Surely, there will be something there which will be in bloom in mid-March. Just to be safe, I'll plan on petunias as well. :)

Thanks!

why dont you contact a florist and have them order you pots of white tulips in bloom that you can just place into the ground.. if you contact them early enough they can get in touch with their grower/suppler and have them plant what you need and they can have it ready the date you need them for. Unless you have a greenhouse and can prechill your bulbs they would have a better chance of having them where they needed to be bloom wise when you needed them.. it would save you a lot of work and worriing and we all know you have enough other things to worry about when you plan a wedding
just my 2 cents worth as a former florist and wedding designer..
good luck with everything!

Allysum isn't blooming in 7b in mid-March. At least it isn't here. blkraven2 has a good idea, or you could force them yourself. I haven't ever done this, and personally I'd order what I needed from the florist, but that's me.

blkraven2, Your suggestion makes all kinds of sense. The pots of tulips would be very pretty to place around. No stress.

Having all the things in the flower beds blooming just when I want them to makes a nice daydream! Mother Nature's schedule might be a little different. I'll look at the daffodils and tulips I already ordered as a bonus if they bloom for the wedding. At least the daffodils are a long term investment.

Thanks so much.

Maybe you could do some white daffodils and white pansies? Surely if you planted enough varieties of whites something would be blooming at that time.

Excellent idea! Now, pansies -- those we can count on!!

For the daffodils, I had some Erlicheer last year and they did well, so I ordered more of those and also -- get this: Bridal Crown. The name was too perfect to resist.

Thanks.
