The first pic is an Asian lady beetle larva and pupa:

You mean a lady bug?? Oops! I think in throwing out what I deemed as "fungus" I threw a few in the garbage. Open garbage, though, not in a bag or anything. Just a pail. Please tell me the rest of it's not more eggs!

Yes, ladybugs, but bugs are a group of insects that don't include beetles, so I avoid calling beetles 'bugs'. The black stuff, I don't know, but I'd guess it might be poo...

These beetles are good for your plants but some places (like here) they invade houses. And some states don't have as many of our native lady beetles anymore, because these eat them.

Well, the colloquial name for them is "lady bugs" and I only know what you're talking about when you say that!
What's the difference between native ones and these?

If colloquial names were enough, we probably wouldn't have ID forums! They're just different species from different places. These are supposed to eat more than our native lady beetles. One way to tell the adults from other lady beetles is the "M" or "W" shape on the front of the head. There are hundreds of native lady beetles and they're all different.

They eat the aphids on your plants.

I know! I feel so bad. But There were only a few that I "threw out!"

So ... anyone know about the black stuff?

Just in case anyone is wondering ... I no longer rid my mock orange of these wonderful creatures and they come back every year! :)
