With water retention in mind: I plant all my pots with that Miracle Grow water retentive soil, add a few sprinkles of water retentive polymer beads, and line the top soil with decorative gravel to reduce evaporation. This seems to help allot, and since I have to leave for weeks at a time, it becomes a must. So far so good.
