Katie59, there's a set of Magnolias called 'The Girls' which were developed from the National Arboretum. Smaller than the Saucer Magnolias and slightly larger than stellatas with larger/wider blooms. I think the names are Judy, Jane, Randy, Ricki, Susan. They're good and hardy. I kinda like M. 'Woodsman' (shown below in a Seattle Garden).
