Finally, BugGuide got another request for ID for it...from the same county I live in, strangely enough. Although they knew it was a scoliid wasp, they had been unable to get the species on it because it's not even in the insect keys for the U.S. The other person (in Hondo, Texas area) had collected an actual wasp specimen, something I would never do...I might kill other kinds of wasps, but not this one. So, now it's ID'd as Campsomeris ephippeum...still no common name, but I'll just call it Corona de Cristo Wasp, because that is its favorite flower of all to nectar on!
