My bird house is made of car-siding -Don't think it has to be treated either but will coat it with polyurathane to protect the artwork. It's top and bottom are cedar.
My daughter drew the flower (from one of my photos) and some other designs that i will finish painting soon.
Plus-I think all wood except cedar has to be treated or the elements will play havoc and so will termites.
