I've found that the "auto focus" on my camera often chooses to focus on a leaf rather than on the bloom I'm trying to photograph. When you use the macro setting for closeups, your depth of field is smaller, so parts of the photo are more likely to be out of focus (which is fine and even desirable as long as your subject is in focus). I haven't been using the macro mode so much anymore to take closeups... instead, I take a photo from further away and then crop it in my photo editor to get the close-up shot that I want. Since my camera has reasonably good resolution (5 megapix), this works just fine for me, even if it's not very professional LOL.

That neat, flat rosette of leaves reminds me of the way my Anthoflores noid (purple with white thumbprint) has been growing under the lights... Here it is in bloom.... I think they look like sisters! ;-)
