Fran, tell us what fertilizer regimen you have your plumies on. There is a bunch of information on fertilizers over on the sticky FAQ thread. If you are trying to get flowers, you should be fertilizing weekly with a bloom booster formula. I would check the rootball on the one that is shriveling and drying up. It sounds like it is not getting enough water. I would pull it out of the container and check the root ball.
