I have only accepted 1 cutting from one of my seedlings I truly have not breed anything earth shattering yet..... I have never named a seedling someone else has grown out for me Not to say I wouldn't want to some day,or have some input in the naming but so far I 've left it all up to the grower I also have some plants I have nick named so I don't call the sauve cross or aurea cross Lake effect is one I love it Not convinced its worthy of registering but I love it Also if you do get a seedling that it different from everything out there it needs to be trialed See how it does for other people in other places, growing climates, and temperatures Be careful who you choose to trial them though There are some breeders out there who have given brugs to others to trial, and thought they were trust worthy they ,in turn ,have given them away and sold pieces of them... Without the hybridizers permission. The hybridizer is the one who decides if its worthy of release...There are some brugs floating around out there that should have NEVER been released...now or in the future And NO,I'm not saying which ones should have never been released So if you love your seedlings that you grew out from someones hybridizing the steps you should take are 1-Take pictures 2-Show the pictures to the hybridizer 3-Discuss its merits...with the hybridizer and others 4- Offer the hybridizer a cutting 5- if it looks like a brug thats already out there do not name it, register it, and send it out for release 6- If you love it or have a sentimental attachment to it,or just want to keep it for breeding ,by all means ,name it ,keep it,love it to death But DO NOT send out tons of cuttings from it 7- If its something new, unusual or heart stopping gorgeous, and others feel that way, choose a few trust worthy people to trial it for you,not just for a few months, but a year or 2 ,see how well it blooms, keeps color, handles being wintered over in different situations, how well it roots, bud drop, deformed blooms, its pest tolerance, weather tolerance....etc........ These are all factors that make a brug worthy also if you use common courtesy and respect the wishes of the hybridizer you'll have a good reputation that will make it more likely that you will be trusted with more seeds ,from better crosses You'll know if it is worthy of releasing Do you want your name attached to a brug that may be pretty but only blooms once and a while,or very few blooms? Or deformed blooms? Or is a aphid magnet? Or is a look alike to something else and people call it a wannabe? Think hard on how you'd feel releasing a brug and have people say Oh I got rid of that,I wasn't impressed or It never bloomed well or the blooms are always deformed or It looks like Brug A and Brug A is so much better so I got rid of Brug B It would hurt my feelings if people said that about my brugs. And its my guess it would hurt others too Here is Lake Effect |
