I leave them up all winter so the seed heads feed the birds and to encourage survival of the various insects that overwinter in the debris. It is a bit early for the insects to emerge, so I cut up the stalks and inserted them into containers to make "Insect Hotels". This kept most inhabitants and their homes intact, and will provide warm season shelter for others as well. A little green worm poked it's head out of the cut end of one of the first stalks I pruned. |
