Crinums if planted outdoors in Dallas- are apt to freeze back after a hard frost, Here in the zone 8 they are hardier, but still freeze back. Like an onion, if planted on top of a pot, their roots will pull them deeper and deeper into the soil until they are too deep to bloom after awhile. IF in a pot cover only the bottom half to 1/3 of the bulb. They love heat, and humidity, and can get huge down here- saw a crinum the stalk was 18" thick above the bulb.
