Another tip I have found useful--where ever you decide to shop for plants on a regular basis, find out on which day their plant shipments usually arrive, and shop there on that day or the following day. If you go on the day of shipments, you might also find some good markdowns of plants left over from last week's shipment, provided you are experienced enough to determine plant health.
