As soon as you see the sprouts, plant them at the recommended depth. Sometimes it is hard to decided if it is root, or leaf nodes. What I do is plant it on the sided so that the seed can decide which way to send the sprouting part. I do this with daylilies. What I thought was the root, turned out to be the top of the seed.

Below are sprouting seeds of daylilies to show what I mean. The white part turned out to be the growing point where leaves developed. Could have fooled me.
