Welcome to Daves Garden, Gretchen. I do believe there is a chance that brugs planted in the ground at your place, might come back the next spring. However, I would take cuttings to be sure that you don't lose the brug totally in case it decides not to re-grow the next spring after a few frosty nights. Versicolors would NOT survive, but like I said you may have some luck with others. I plant brugs in pots and in the ground and just take cuttings for the next year. I learned some time ago that if I put them all in pots, I would soon be broke from buying the pots and the soil to fill them. I've also found that they get just as big from a cutting as they do from a tree held over that has to be trimmed and re-potted. Much luck with your brugs. This picture is a brug that was started from a cutting last fall. Normally they would not be in front of the garage, but I was saving them from the frost so they would bloom for me.
