New to Brugs

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I was not familiar with Brugs prior to joining PDB, and want to begin growing them. I live in 8B (Texas Hill Country) and wonder what variety(s) thrive here? Do they need to be overwintered inside? Are they perennials? I have seen them called annuals? Help, please!!! Gretchen

Hi Gretchen Kaufmann, enjoy this side. Your names sound very german?:-)

Brugs are little trees or bushes, they will live for many years. Only thing they donīt like is to get frozen.
You must see how your climate will be in wintertime.

Thank you both -- we do have freezes here, but they are generally only at night, and infrequent. Guess my best bet would be containers?

Yes!

We LOVE containers!! lol pick those dudes right up in the fall, and bring them in to a sheltered area. I know the containers that I have personally heard about range from 1 gallon size (you could be watering them 3-4 times a day possibly with this size) up to 15 gallon sizes (less frequent waterings)
They love water and fertilizer, and they love to have attention, and (at least mine) kinda like my singing. :o)
MOST are quite easy to root from cuttings, and from what I have heard (this will be my 1st year for my own brugs) they smell AMAZING!
LOL just a quick simple what I know about brugs... you will hear differnt stories from everyone, about what works best for them. ALWAYS somthing new to report, and we have many experts that are always so wonderful to help! (Ludger being one of them) We have some VERY VERY wonderful, never selfish, always there to answer questions, and offer cuttings or seeds of what they have, JUST GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE HERE :::breathing:::
Seriously I can never explain in words these people... you will have to see for yourself! :o)

Hi Gretchen. I live in 8b also on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I have never lost one yet in winter. Just mulch very heavily. They love the fall leaves you rake up. It also is good for them.

Thank you all so much!!! I can't wait to get started!!!

Hallo Gretchen. Welcome at davesgarden.

Welcome to Daves Garden, Gretchen. I do believe there is a chance that brugs planted in the ground at your place, might come back the next spring. However, I would take cuttings to be sure that you don't lose the brug totally in case it decides not to re-grow the next spring after a few frosty nights. Versicolors would NOT survive, but like I said you may have some luck with others. I plant brugs in pots and in the ground and just take cuttings for the next year. I learned some time ago that if I put them all in pots, I would soon be broke from buying the pots and the soil to fill them. I've also found that they get just as big from a cutting as they do from a tree held over that has to be trimmed and re-potted. Much luck with your brugs. This picture is a brug that was started from a cutting last fall. Normally they would not be in front of the garage, but I was saving them from the frost so they would bloom for me.
