Basically, you kill the weeds/grass. Spread layers of wet newspaper to keep any new weeds from popping up through the mulch (I used 6 sheets or more). Then, get burlap, which comes in rolls, and carefully pin down with those metal U shaped pins. Mulch the hill - use shreddy, fine mulch rather than the lightweight chunky stuff. The mulch should stick to the burlap. Eventually the burlap rots away but the mulch will form a sort of mat and unless water is flooding down the slope or deer are kicking it all over, it should stay in place pretty well. I planted shrubs before putting in the layers of newspaper, burlap, and mulch. Here's a picture of my project last summer, partially finished. |
