I have an old Ford Garden Guide about 47 years old.
It said 25 years ago which would have been 72 years ago there were a scant half-doze different African violets. Today ( meaning 47 years ago ) there we an estimated 3,500.
Today year 2007 there are about 30 thousand named African violets !
The book also says In a popularity poll conducted in 1958 49 years ago :)) by the 16,000-member African Violet Society of America , these were the African violet varieties that came out on top. Whi Madonna ( Great Av plant I grew several by leaf and shared some here on DG's anyone still growing her Great Vintage who have you shared her with :))
, Ohio Bountiful, Granger Garden's, Blue Nocturne, Bud's Strike Me Pink, White Pride, Black Magic ( Another great one I've grown and shared ), White Pride Supreme, Pink Miracle, Double Pink Cloud, Ruffled Queen, T-V Vallinpink, Snow Prince, Pink Cheer, Dixie Moonbeam.
**** Sad numbers I asked Joe Burns who ahead of the FC program how many member's are there of our AVSA now in 2007 !!
He said he was not sure the exact number but it was not where the number it was in 1958 and 60's. :((
He also said " Growing African violets was a big hobby back in 1960. Most horticultural societies are experiencing a decline in membership.:
